danny janes of joss cues a long time ago had several ivory jointed and steel jointed cues covered in a way that the players coud not tell what type of cue or joint they had
he had pros at a tournament try to guess
and they couldnt consistently tell one from the other
this is a recollection of a post along time ago
flat faced /piloted/sleeved/wood to would joints as mentioned all have some theoretical/practical advantage or disadvantages like the increased weight of a steel joint
but i dont think you are going to find a concensus best
if there was 90% of cues would have that joint and there wouldnt be a debate

What joint go you use on your best cues?
Most cues I build have a flat faced 5/16-14 joint pin. I do them three ways. With brass insert in shaft, with phenolic insert and with no insert for those who like the pin into wood feel. I feel the smaller pin transfers the energy/feel better than the 3/8 pin does.
