Nice interview Jim. Jose definitely belongs in the HOF. I remember the excruciating match with Double J at the US Open and his anger at the interview after wards. "Wipe stick, drink water, powder hands every shot." It was hell to watch.

I can't help but think that Jose will make it into the Hall of Fame. He certainly belongs there. He may be the most underrated player of all, but as he says in the interview the players know that he belongs in the HOF.
I love the story about playing Earl 10-ball. Earl lost and said it was because he was tired, so Jose says "well go get some rest then and we'll play some more." Hilarious.
I saw Jose play Efren in person one time. It was the finals of the last west coast Pechauer tour tournament a few years ago, at Hollywood Billiards. Jose won 13-4.

I have never met Jose but have had the pleasure of watching he and Efren play 1P out in Riverside, Ca in a 1P tournament that was held as part of a local birthday celebration for Efren's 50th. Those Filipinos do like kareoke. I will have to pass on the squid juice-next time. But the Hennessee's cures many ills.
Quick story: I have not met Jose but was once approached by him at HT in Bellflower. I got there too late on a Sunday to play in their tournament. So-I watched em play on Big Bertha for a while and watched some guys play caroms. When both carom tables opened up I rented the balls and tried to imitate some of the shots I had seen earlier.
Late in the afternoon I noticed Jose come in the door. 45 minutes or so later he wandered by the other end of the table and stood until I looked up. Jose had his money half out of his pocket and looked at me and raised his eyebrows .
My take on this was 'play some?' I said (actually-tongue in throat); more like croaked-no thank you. That is as close as I'll ever come to playing Jose Parica. A missed opportunity to have lost to one of the premier players of our sport. My bad.

I only attended one Pechauer tournament at Hollywood about 5 years ago. I went to watch our league director compete. He did OK until he lost hill-hill to Raphael Martinez when Raphael speared a jacked up full-cue half-ball jump over the 7 to back-cut bank the 8 off the end rail back to the corner beneath him and 3 rail the cb back to him for the 7 and get out. Wow
I think Max Eberle (house pro at the time?) and Efren played a match about the same time out in the center of the downstairs just in front of the bar.
I think Efren won but there was a lot of shouting for good kicks and shots by both of them.
I saw each Jose and Efren catching some shuteye between matches in rooms at the facility.
I didn't get to see the (13-4 Parica) match.
One of the few tournaments I've been to-it was a lot of fun.

Great interview! I wished we had interviews like this for all of the great players.
Sounds about par for the course for Rafael.
I remember that match between Efren and Max. Max came out on fire and played great. I think he was up 7-1 in the race to 9, and then Efren just kicked into another gear that you only see from truly great players and took the match at hill-hill.
I played Jose once in a tournament in Riverside. It was the last day of the tournament, down to the final 16 players. We were tied at 4-4 in a race to 9. In each of the next two games I had long-rail banks that ended up hanging in the pocket. He ran out each time, went up 6-4 and ended up winning 9-6. But, the cool thing was that I got him on three fouls in one game. It was funny, he just looked at me and laughed when he missed the kick on the third foul. Efren won that tournament over Kim Davenport, and Jose was third.

I met Jose last year in Phoenix..... he was playing a tough match at the Desert Shootout... but looked like he was playing for fun. His cue ball control was the best I have seen. He plays exact paths for the CB and you can see his thoughts while he plays (he draws imaginary lines with his cue to vision the shots sometimes.. lol) and is a pleasure to watch.

I was there too but didn't play in that one.
Those tournament room Ernesto tables played real tough -especially the one nearest the 'steps' (Bill's table).
The first couple of Labor day tournaments were great with the filipino contingent, the Russian, Kim, Schmidt,the mexican champions-everybody came out-it was terrific for us pool fans.
I've played it a couple times (dead money contributor supporter) since. I don't know if its happening this year or not.

Jose is in Sacramento now. He will be playing, among others, in the Chuck Marculis Memorial tournament. Chuck was close to all the players and they come here often.
Jose is very approachable. If you can make it here, you'll find it very comfortable and get a chance to meet many top players. I wouldn't be suprised if Jose would play a cheap set with fans. Nice guy, and he hangs out all day and night.
And clearly deserves the HOF. He may be one of the best all around players ever. Right there with Efren, Sigel and Varner.
