Joss as a break cue

I bought a Joss off of someone a year ago for $185. Don't know if I paid too much but don't really care.

Anyway, I bought it as an extra cue, but I never use it because I am so used to the Z2 shaft now.

Is it wise or unwise to decide to use it as a break cue? Should I keep reserving it as an extra for another player? Will using it as a break cue damage it at all?

I've been using ghastly house cues as break cues in the meantime.

Thanks.

You should be ok with it maybe put a harder tip on it and you should be good to go.

Break cue

I would not use it as a break cue. Isn't the Z2 a LD shaft? Break cues are engineered different, and their shafts are much much stiffer with a 13-14 mm tip on them.

You can pick up a J&J break/jump cue for $60, maybe cheaper on E-bay (I got mine there for $44.75).

I used one of my Joss cues as a break cue for awhile. I put an OB break shaft on it. I liked the fact that I was able to manipulate the weight pretty easy with the different Joss weights I had at the time...sometimes I'd try to lighten it up, other times I'd add the weight back in...

It never did any damage to the butt of the cue using it this way...

If you're going to use the Joss shaft, I'd recommend (as others have) to put a harder tip on (e.g. Samsara Break Tip).

Should be just fine. In fact, with the standard JOSS shaft, which is on the stiff side, and a purpose made break tip, I would say you just may like it. Give it a try. :)

I use my Joss for both playing and breaking for years now.

I used my Joss as a break cue for 15 years...all with the same original tip! It got compressed pretty hard and worked really well. It crushed a break. I tend to bend the cue pretty good on a break shot, and finally cracked the shaft's joint collar. I put a new shaft on it and gave it to my son as a player. He dropped it and broke the butt cap...I sent it in to Joss to get it replaced, and Debbie Janes remarked that everyone was surprised at how good a condition the cue was in after all these years (it's an 80s model J11). I've never tried a break cue that could match it.

breaking with joss cues is fine

i believe i remember years ago dan janes said his cues should well stand the stress of break shots without undue problems. i don't speak for him at all, but i believe he wanted shooters to know his cues would hold up for the long run. i personally shoot and break with an older one(pre numbering) myself if i just take one cue with me.
