Joss Cue Handle Diameter

I'm not getting much response in the Cuemakers Forum so I thought I would ask on the Main Forum. As some have said, the Main Forum seems to get loads more viewing than the other forums.

Can anyone tell me what the typical size is for a Joss Cue down around the bottom part of the handle, just above the butt? In other words, if it has an irish linen grip what is the diameter of the cue at the bottom of the irish linen where you would typically grip the cue, just above the butt. In mm please. I would assume it would be around 29mm but I could be wrong. If you have a fairly recent Joss Cue and a pair of digital calipers could you measure yours for me?

The reason I ask is because I am pondering buying a Joss Cue and the one I had about ten years ago I didn't like because the grip/handle seemed to be too big. I am curious if they still make them like that nowadays.

Interesting. I've ordered a Joss precisely because I've found their butts to be a tad bit slimmer than just about any other cue out there.

Respectfully, are you sure it was a Joss that you played with previously in which you found the butt too thick?

When I had an older(95-10) Joss the handle was thicker than any other cue I had except for the Lee peppers. Both are gone now

I have a few recent Joss cues at home. I`ll take some measurements when I come home. Is it the to and bottom part of the grip area you would like to have measured or the diameter at the buttcap?

Cuesblues goes to the trouble of digging up and measuring two Joss cues for your benefit and this is how you treat him? Then you complain that people are "not nice" to you?

We use inches to measure butt diameters
The only reason mm's are used for shafts is to get larger number to work with

I measure the thickest part of the butt above the butt cap, typically that will tell you what you need to know.

1.28 is on the thick side, and 1.24 is about average
 
My early 90s Joss had a thicker diameter than most cues I've owned or tried since then, but it's been usually the thing to do thinner butts in customs than the production ones. So you are right, it would feel thicker than others.
 
You need to state a target, desired measurement before any of this becomes relevant. Measure what you want, then contact the manufacturer.

Can't you understand even if you get a thousand replies here, that it doesn't amount to a hill of beans as far as giving you the information you require?

It's really almost pointless.

Any competent cue maker can offset his taper bar do a gradual taper handle and still maintain a thick forearm.
The top of the handle has almost nothing to do with the thickness at the bottom to those who know how to do it .

The popular taper back in the days was some .835-.840" joint and 1.275" bottom on straight taper.
Along the years, some makers figured out how to make a handle with a gradual and slim taper . That way, when you hold the wrap section in the middle or the bottom, there wasn't as huge transition compared to the old school taper .
Nowadays, a lot of cue makers make the bottom of their cues around 1.250" or less. It makes the bottom of the handle at 1.200" or less.

I make mine around 1.180" to 1.190" and still maintain a thick forearm.

I have an Excel file of cue dimensions of different makers. My late mentor compiled it . I think factory cues can vary a lot . The file says Joss at the bottom of the handle is 30.92MM or 1.218".

I guess I should have posted my update in the Main Forum instead of over in the Ask The Cuemaker Forum. I updated it earlier.

Emailed back and forth with Dan today. He basically said his cues in the Available Custom Cues section were just as good as his cues in the Handmade section as far as quality, materials, craftsmanship, construction, hit, feel, and playability.

He gave me some specs on the diameter of his cues down around the butt plate. As soon as I get a new battery for my digital calipers I can check some of my cues that I already have and we can go from there.

And for the record, the cues that I have are as follows:
Chad Carter Custom
Nova Custom
Jacoby
Nick Varner
Schon
Lucasi
Predator
Cuetec
Players

Might have forgotten one or two, dunno.

I love this forum!

Never in a million years would I have guessed that after at least nine cues, that a minuscule diameter adjustment, so slight that you need micrometers to measure it, could ignite one's game and propel it to an entirely higher level. This is some seriously incredible stuff!!!
