Joss Cue Handle Diameter

It's really almost pointless.

Any competent cue maker can offset his taper bar do a gradual taper handle and still maintain a thick forearm.
The top of the handle has almost nothing to do with the thickness at the bottom to those who know how to do it .

The popular taper back in the days was some .835-.840" joint and 1.275" bottom on straight taper.
Along the years, some makers figured out how to make a handle with a gradual and slim taper . That way, when you hold the wrap section in the middle or the bottom, there wasn't as huge transition compared to the old school taper .
Nowadays, a lot of cue makers make the bottom of their cues around 1.250" or less. It makes the bottom of the handle at 1.200" or less.

I make mine around 1.180" to 1.190" and still maintain a thick forearm.

I have an Excel file of cue dimensions of different makers. My late mentor compiled it . I think factory cues can vary a lot . The file says Joss at the bottom of the handle is 30.92MM or 1.218".

Thank you for the informative post.

I got some new digital calipers today. Looks like most of my cues are around 1.25 inches down around the handle, just above the butt plate.

Dan Janes told me his cues were around 1.27 at the same spot. Apparently, and i'm not sure how or why, but the Joss Cue I had years ago must have been different for a reason because I am sure it was much larger than that. Either way, the difference is negligible in my opinion.

And most of my cues are very similar around the top of the irish linen grip and the bottom of the grip. 26mm at the top, 31mm at the bottom.

Starting the process of working with Dan to have one of his Customs tailored to my specs.

Looking forward to this! Ralf Souquet plays, or used to play, with a Joss so I am going to be in good company.

Will keep you's posted.

Joss cues have evolved. It depends on when it was made.

In addition the type of wrap (or no wrap) can alter one's perception of the thickness of the butt in my experience.

I had a friend that thought a certain cue was too thick. We measured it and the handle was thinner than his own cue. The difference? Different wrap.

I love this forum!Never in a million years would I have guessed that after at least nine cues, that a minuscule diameter adjustment, so slight that you need micrometers to measure it, could ignite one's game and propel it to an entirely higher level. This is some seriously incredible stuff!!!

Now, that's funny...and true.

To be honest, I'm among the guilty. I prefer a thinner feeling butt for reasons previously stated. Does it make a difference? The truth is, I don't know. I "FEEL" as if I play better, but I've never studied it and the facts may be just the opposite. So many people are willing to shell out $ for products they subjectively feel will make them play better, lol. As I tell my patients all the time "feelings aren't facts. It's a fact you feel a a certain way, but the feeling you have may or may not be factual in reality".

Just so everyone will know...........the Joss Cue I had about 10-12 years ago had a much larger handle than I have on my other cues. It was noticeable. The comment about a miniscule diameter adjustment is just plain wrong.

And forgive me for wanting a cue to my specs. I mean, what am I thinking??? I suppose I could tell Joss just make it however you want it and that will be fine with me. Then again, does anybody do that when they are ordering or buying a custom cue?

Mike, I think it's awesome that you know what you want and that you're ordering your cue that way. My comments above were mostly aimed at myself and then the general public in, well, general. No offense intended. Please post pics and a review when you get your cue from Dan (as will I, lol). How long did Dan quote you for your cue to be built? -Z-

Steve,
My response wasn't intended to be a jab at you. It was intended for someone else after I read their comments. Someone that I have blocked a long time ago.

Are you having a Joss cue made too?

Mike

Indeed.

I for one am happy to see somebody ordering custom specs from Joss.

All too often people talk of Joss as if they are a "factory".

I look forward to you posting the results.

Kewl, glad you didn't take it that way.
Yes, I ordered a cue from Dan last week. I ordered a Joss specifically because I've always found them to be/feel thinner in the butt than almost any other cue I've played with, which feels the most comfortable to me. Details here: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=428987

Just take a step back and think.

Having never found a cue which feels comfortable, you are still just blindly surmising what you will like.

Even if you don't have a large selection of cues to actually try out in your area, make an enjoyable excursion out of it, and actually touch, feel and smell cues from a dealer with a large inventory of many brands of cues.

Then, and only then, will be assured that you will be investing in a cue which will meet your needs.

You simply cannot refute this well intended advise. Otherwise continue to block my well intended advice, and waste another large sum of money on yet another unsatisfactory investment. Take that to the bank, or continue to obsess needlessly and inaccurately. It's your cash...

I just recently got one of Joss' custom cues. I had an interesting conversation with him. Essentially he said that the customs are cues he has actual built himself just like in days past. He likes the freedom of building whatever he wants. My first cue was a Joss, and when I heard he had made it personally I snap bought it. It was one of his lesser expensive ones.

It has a very slim feeling butt.It seems to me to be a very slight compound taper as opposed to purely straight.

It is also a pretty terrific cue. Slightly stiffer and more solid than the late 1980s Janes I had. Been a similar type of cue. Very well balanced and feels light in the grip hand. Plus he still has NOS Champions he has held on to for 30 years. He switched the wrap from white/black to red/black at no charge

He does not advertise that he hand makes the customs, seems like it is just his way to enjoy making cues. But a hand made Dan Janes for $500-$1000 has to be one of the best deals in custom cues. I am very happy.

Only negative is the ferrule material seems to stain easily.

Never have loved Schons, I personally prefer Joss cues.

Now just waiting for my Dominiak cue, and then later Kim Walker and Josh Treadway true customs.

When I spoke to Janes about making my cue he assured me that he would be the only one to touch it.

I definitely want him to make my cue.

Joss "production" cues are undervalued IMHO. But the cues made by Janes himself are even more so and are a real bargain IMHO.

One of the best deals in custom cues? I would say so. When you consider that he is a HOF cue maker and has been making cues since 1968? Wow.

I wish I had more cash on hand when the Titlist conversions by him were sold recently. Such conversions by lesser makers sell for more. Why? Because his name is connected to a "production" operation. No other reason. They certainly aren't lesser cues.

DCP, good luck with your cue... I am still researching for my next cue. Not sure if it will be custom or not, but thanks to some of your comments and messages, they are definitely one of the choices for me in the future.

I had a Joss/Predator combo when I was playing more and that was my daily shooter for sure out of all my cues, even with more expensive ones while I lived in Jacksonville.

When do you expect to have it?

Are you aware of the Joss High Performance shaft? Tried one?

Not my cup of tea but might appeal to the LD crowd.

https://josscues.com/shafts/high-performance-shaft/

Easily added to a Joss custom "handmade" for a complete Joss package.

And no, I am no Joss fanboy. I do love my block letter Joss, but my daily player is a 1980 Huebler. Though I do own a couple modern Joss cues as well and feel they are excellent players.
