Joss cue. Your thoughts...

So I was just checking out craigslist and I come across this Joss. The guy only wants $150, and says it's hardly been used so it's in almost brand new condition. It's a nice looking cue but then I started thinking is this too good to be true... I'm concerned about counterfeits but the pictures look legit and the guy sounds like he knows about cues cuz he just sold off his collection and was thinking about keeping this one. But he said he called Joss and gave them the serial number and they didn't have it on record...

So from these pics and your own knowledge of Joss cues.

Do you think this cue is legit?
Do you think it's a good deal?
Would you buy this cue if you were me?
What should I look for when I examine this cue in person?

Thanks in advance for all your help with this one AZB!

I think low-end Josses start around $200-$250. I picked mine up at a pawn shop for $120 with the case or something like that. Put a Z2 shaft on it and that's been my player for the past.. uhh.. 5 years? It's got a similar look to the one shown, but different. Looks fine to me and sounds like a fair deal - Harry Truman would be proud. ;)

Isn't Joss usually stamped on the black collar of the butt and shaft?

I can't recall seeing it on the stainless joint, but I've been wrong before.

Both mine and a friend's are both marked on the collar. Not sure if maybe it's a 'newer' thing.

I bought a Joss from a craigslist ad for $160. a little fancier but similar. the girl said she'd paid around $300 for it.

I can't imagine counterfeiting $150 cues. Looks legit to me. Look for JOSS on the butt, mine has that, although I don't know if they all do?

Just saw the post by Chris, mine has the engraved Joss on the joint with a number following it, too small for me to read, nothing on the shaft except the same plain black collar.

Is that the typical pin? I think they are usually 5/16 14. Other than that, it sounds like a good deal if it's authentic. My concern would be the fact that the serial isn't on record. Buyer beware.

I just went to the Joss webpage and it looks like you actually need to register the serial number with them. Seems possible somebody would buy a Joss and not register it.

If it hits good, what difference does it make whether it is real or counterfeit?
At $150 ASKING PRICE it really isn't an investment.

Oh, and the pin looks like mine if I were to enlarge it like the picture.

The cue certainly seems to be legit and that model is a common one. It is also tue that the newer ones have the serial number insribed on the joint. As long as it's straight I believe that it would be a good buy.

Joss Cue

I would be more worried about meeting a stranger on Craigslist than getting fake Joss! That site has become a hotbed of criminal activity in my area. Good luck I hope it works out...

The "A" on the serial number should make that a 1999 cue I believe.

There absolutely were counterfeit JOSS cues but I don't know if they had a serial number.

It looks legit as far as other aspects of the cue though.

Strange that JOSS does not have the number on record though. Very strange. It does not have to be registered for them to have record of it.

At $150 I would call it a nice enough deal on a four point. Even ones with no points will typically sell for a little more than that used on Ebay. Craigslist yields better prices because of a smaller market.

I would say that unless this is what you were looking for I wouldn't jump on it. It isn't a good "flip" deal if that's what you are after. If you are after a shooter it could be a nice deal.

If you are looking for a JOSS there is one for sale in the forum with four points and inlays from the mid nineties that is being offered for a great price. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=277965&highlight=joss

The difference it would make to me is that personally I don't want to support counterfeiters. I'm not knocking anyone else that does, it's just not my thing.
And as you said $150.00 isn't too bag of a risk. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thanks for all the help guys. AZB is a wealth of knowledge and a great community to be part of. I appreciate all the time and effort put forth by my fellow members of AZB.

There was some good info for me to go on. I am looking for a shooter for myself and am not thinking about flipping it right away. This isn't the cue I've had my hearty set on but it is half the price and I hear Joss is a great player. I'm hoping that I'd still be able to get $100 or so for it later when I have money for the one I really want. I guess I'd better sleep on it and see if it is a good decision...

Thanks Again AZB!

If you buy it as a player and later decide to sell it you shouldn't have any problems recovering your money I would think.

Irrelevant. I think it's a great cue for a buck and a half either way. I'd jump on it myself. It's a nicely understated cue.

I agree with you 100% on not supporting counterfeiters, but unless the seller is the counterfeiter, the supporting has already been done . . .
But i agree with you that it looks like a good deal and I find it highly unlikely that a counterfeit of a $300-$400 cue would be that good.

I purchased a JOS04 back in early January and it does not have "Joss" engraved on the stainless joint. Just the serial number.

It could be an older model JOS04, though.
