It is a sad day when a person spends $450 on a cue and plays with it for 4 weeks and it warps. Sent the cue back to Joss and all they would do is try and sell me a new shaft for $80 (they claim that is 50% off). I know time are tough for cue makers but, really? Joss told me that they can not control the weather so they don't warranty the cues against warping. What else goes wrong with a cue if you don't miss treat it. As the customer I can't control the weather either. So now it is my fault that Joss Cues don't use aged wood, and make a product that sucks.

What company sold you your cue?

Leave it in your car overnight or for a few days or what? Few cues warp for no reason. Who sold you the cue, Joss, direct from them or from a third party?
 
Joss cues don't suck at all. Shafts from any maker will warp from time to time. Most cue makers don't warrant warpage, too many things can cause it to happen outside of any control.

I'm sure you kept it in a climate controlled area, never left it in a hot car, or anything else. Higher humidity from where the cue was made can make them warp.

How badly was it warped? Tip lifting off the table bad? I've had new and old shafts from them that didn't warp. Have on in my case that is about 10 years old that has a very very slight roll. Its my favorite shaft when I have a schon or a joss. Its not perfect but it plays great.
 
I have been playing with Joss Cues since 1971. They are one of the finest custom and/or production cues on the market. I know of no cuemakers that warranty stock maple shafts against warpage as it is totally out of their control after you receive it.

Dan Janes is a good friend and one of the finest, if not the finest, people I have met in the pool world! I think many will agree. It is immature to attempt to discredit a HOF cuemaker who has dedicated his life to the sport.

i believe i would JUMP on an $80 shaft,

posthaste. as others have said, it is impossible to tell why the shaft warped. i have pretty much been the cause of all my cues' problems except for the little tidbit DPK passed on about wetsanding your shafts.

Yes I do sell Joss Cues. However they will all be sold with no warranty from me. There are still cue makers that warranty cues even if they warp. Weather is a big reason I have seen cues warp. This cue was only a few weeks old when it warped. Joss has some great cues but I was just sadden to see that they would not do anything to help out a company and a player with a cue issue.
I understand that they can not control the weather and how it effects the cue, but neither can the person that has the cue. It was not left in the car as the he (cue owner) does not drive. The roll is so bad that the tips lifts off the table about a half inch. When you roll just the shaft it has no roll. So how is this a warped shaft (that's what I was told from Joss).
 
i had a joss cue break. i sent it to them and they stood behind it 100%

with that being said it is rare for a shaft to warp that much in that short of time without misuse of some type. alot depend on how the cue is stored too. hanging is best not leaning. sometimes its a facing issue. endgrain can absorb moisture. also them cheapy cases where people put the screw and joint down can throw it off

if i were you id have it faced. sounds like joint issue. may get some movment out
 
I will be facing it once I get it back. That will fix it I just did not understand why they would not do that. I know that will fix it. I just did not understand how it could be that bad in such a short time. It sat in his case for a month before he got it back to me. It got worse sitting in his case.

you would spend more money shipping the cue then just paying to get to faced.

First it was Joss not using "Old Aged Wood" now it is the facing. The facing was either right from the beginning or not...it doesn't change in a few weeks...old aged wood has absolutley nothing to do with facing. You expect the savy readers on AZ to believe that Dan Janes with 40 years of cue making experience would not know a facing issue from a warped shaft!!! LOL: This is better than watching Ripley's Believe it or Not on the Discovery Channel!!!
 
the older and more aged the wood is the better. if i could go back 50 years to buy wood id either fill my shop or run out of money

as far as facing goes endgrain asorbs more moisture then the any other area esp if its not sealed. it is vey possible the endgrain swelled and is making the cue roll bad.
 
How is it that the shaft if it has no bad roll until it goes on the butt. As i have said I was just surprised that they would not offer to help with the issue. All they would do is sell me a shaft for $80. I know Joss has a great reputation and that is why I have chosen to sell Joss cue, along with Jacoby and a few others.

Yet you still have Joss cues displayed in plain sight, for sale, on your website. I'm not sure if you've been selling Joss cues for a while or not, but is this is your first bad encounter with Joss? And you're willing to throw this fine cuemaker under the bus in the blink of an eye on Internet forums for this first bad encounter?

Joss is Boss

My Joss will be 42 yrs old shortly.
Been re-finished once but never refaced.
I take CARE of it.It's still straight.
Can't let a cue get hot,cold or damp...or even too dry.
Can't guarantee a cue 'cause some people don't treat it
like a musical instrument.We would ALL have to pay more.

Couldn't agree more Sean. Wood is wood and % alone stands for a chance of one bad shaft to slip through or warp easily. Given there is no way to tell who is at fault here I think offering a replacement shaft at that price is completely fair.
 
I have sold a few Joss cues and have no problem with the ones I have sold. This is the 1st issue I had. Where I was upset was when I was told the ONLY thing he would do is sell me a new shaft even after I explained that the shaft rolled fine when it was not on the butt. I have warrantied shafts I have made in the past with no questions asked. If it was just the shaft I could of made ine and been ok.
Dan has made great cues for a long time and I wanted to get Joss cues out in this area. There are a few people that had Joss cues before I went into business and they spoke very highly of their cue. Now my only concern is that I continue to sell Joss cues and my customers would have this happen to them. I understand that this does not happen much as that is wht I thought it would be no big deal to have it fixed or replaced. Some of the other cues I sell have a lifetime warranty. I also figured that I got the cue from a thrid party in April and sold in a few months later that it would still be covered. I would not be happy if I had a cue for 4 weeks and could not use it because it warped.
Before you reply to this think how would you feel if you spent $450 on a cue and took care of it like it was a baby (this was the most this peson has EVER spent on a cue), and now hear sorry but the company will not do anything.

I will continue to sell Joss cues but will inform people that Joss will not cover a warped cue.
