Joss West Repair...

While its true that a cue is only original once, the deal about refinishes or rebuilds always hurting the value is bunk. You will see time and time again, dealers sending original patina Guses to Barry and Georges to Tasc for reworks and there is only one reason for this, $$. Gleaming big cues bring the money.

Its a fun debate, but really not relevant to this thread, after all the cue has a cracked joint and has to be repaired. I agree the pin should be kept original for value down the road, but who best to work on a JW is interesting.

Georges go to Tasc and when Pete is gone, Pete Jr will be there so that line is stable.

Guses and Barrys go to Barry and when Barry is done, Jimmy will presumably step in.

Tads go to Fred.

Searing is young.

Who is the successor to Stroud? I don't think you gain any cache by sending a JW to Joss, maybe every refinish or rebuild now on a JW will diminish the value.

Who will do Ginas when Ernie is done? I wold suggest if you have an old Gina that needs work you make some plans about getting that cue in right soon.

I think you have to disclose any repair/refinish you know about. I think a Barry repair or refinish on a Gus, doesn't hurt the cue's value, I think a repair or refinish by any other maker does, regardless of the quality of the work.

But what do I know?

Kevin

I agree with Kevin and Barry was kind enough to refinish my Gus. You can see why I did it in this thread.

To All:

Thanks for all the feedback...!!!

I wouldn't have any desire to sell the cue...I just want to get it fixed, without loosing any value...if possible...

And, Knowing that JW is no longer available, I was hoping that there would be someone who could do the job, with minimal loss of value...

It is a really fancy cue...and it deserves to be repaired...

Thus, I needed to research the repair-ability behind it...with consideration to the repair costs vs. the loss of value...

It all sounds like a lot of stress and strain...at this point...

I would send it to Scot Sherbine at Proficient Billiards. His prices are very, very reasonable and his work is excellent. On top of that you will have your cue back in a few weeks. He has refinished a Black Boar, Joss West and others for me and I highly recommend him.

I think agreeing with me is always a good policy. That's almost a rebuild rather than a refinish. Barry is fun to work with if you are an appreciator. He really seems to try his best. I've dealt with him a few times and all of it is way pleasant.

I had a couple of Balabushkas that were "original patina" so I kept them that way when I sold them. If I had it to do again they would have gone to Tasc. Gleaming and pretty is where its at. If the original maker or his (lets call it) descendant, is available its a no brainer.

I know some dealers send Guses to Tasc because Tasc does great work and is faster and maybe cheaper than Barry, but I think that's crazy. I want it as new as it can be and as original as it can be if that makes sense.

Great job Barry did on that great cue.

Yeah you got to get the joint fixed. Since Stroud isn't there to do it and doesn't have an "authorized descendant" to do it, just send it to Proficient. Scott is super reliable, totally fair on price, quick and does great work. You will be thrilled with the whole process.

Thanks, Kevin. I've always bowed to your wisdom.

Actually, if my Gus had not had the window gouged out, I would have left it as-is, as I love the look and feel of the well played cues.

And you are right that Barry is a great guy.
