Jump Cues In 14.1?

Is there a WPA rule for no jump cues in 14.1? If there isn't I think they should be allowed in 14.1. I think they should suffer the same pain as rotation and 8 ball players that hate the jump cue. JT

I have always wondered about the same thing. Maybe they only allow it with playing cues because its more challenging and it will encourage players to play a kick and not a jump.

Why would you need to jump in 14.1? You can pocket any ball, not just the next number in rotation What am I missing?

You have a good point there. I was really only trying to break the 14.1 players balls. Oh well, I'll think of some other way of doing it. Thanks for letting the wind out of my sails. :o. JT

The balls are usually left in a cluster, with just 1-2 free. It's pretty common to play a safety to put your opponent on the other side of the cluster than the free balls.

They also like to jump into the middle of clusters.

The WPA (World-Standardized) rules of play do not distinguish between 14.1 and the other games in terms of the legality of jump shots.

Nor do the WPA equipment specifications distinguish between 14.1 and the other games in terms of the legality of cues (length, weight, tip diameter and composition).

Not allowing jump cues I believe is outdated. Using APA as an exapmle, jump shots are legal if it is attempted with your regular playing cue. This rule gives certain players an advantage. Let me explain.
If you are a player that uses a hard playing tip, it is fairly easy. If you are a player that prefers a soft Morri (again for example) the jump shot becomes nearly impossible. Jump cues make jumps equal to both players....except ability that is! I'm a little off topic here but close to the point.

Why wouldn't you play a jump shot in straight pool? If its the best shot then do it.

Certainly jumping full balls with your playing cue is usually difficult, but playing a very small jump over the edge of a ball? That's easy and very controllable.

jump cues are legal in 14.1, and I think searching the forums will help to bring up the story of Huidji See using a shorty in 14.1 World tournament final match (was it vs Ortmann)? There was many talk about the ethic side of such a move.
I share a feeling it's against the spirit of the game of straight pool, which is about beautiful safety battle exchange that is not to be ruined by simply jumping out of a trap.

On a side note, how do American players treat jump cues in one pocket? Are they allowed under the rules, or everybody just agree not to use them? Or do they?

Do you want to use a jump cue in one pocket, too?

I think they should only be allowed in rotation games.

My opinion is that they detract from any game that allows them. And, also imo, there ain't much left to detract from in rotation games to begin with.

Could say the same thing about break cues. Why not just make everyone break with their playing cue? A jump shot with a full cue will give the advantage to the guy using a light cue with a hard tip, not just more ability. Try jumping a half ball with a heavy cue and a soft playing tip. You would be better off just outlawing jump shots all together.

The lay of the balls could make a jump shot a better shot than a combo. I once jumped my own ball in an eight ball match(Western BCA at Lincoln City A division), because the combo had the cue ball and object ball going in the wrong direction but the jump left an easy connect the dots run out. After I made it and ran out my opponent got real weak, heh heh. I showed the lay out to a Grand Master player and he shot the combo and the balls ended up real ugly. He was very impressed when I showed him my solution to the problem.

As soon as they choose to use them in Snooker, only then should it be considered.

Bogus thread, folks. JT is just trying to bust balls.
