FYI, I just posted a new video that looks at jump shot physics and discusses cue and tip differences, scoop shot fouls and rules, and highly-elevated, near-vertical jump shots. The shots were executed by Florian “Venom” Kohler and recorded in super slow motion by Pubo Huang:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:21 - Cue/Tip Differences
2:33 - Scoop Shots
---- 3:13 - illegal scoop
5:12 - Highly-Elevated Jumps
---- 7:37 - jump-draw trick shot
8:03 - Wrap Up

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

If it came up in a match, what would you guys call (good or foul) on the unintentional scoop jump shot here:

Anybody have an opinion on this?

He's trying to jump. It's not as if he's trying to play the combination and inadvertently jumps over the object ball and makes the ball in the corner pocket in a different manner than he intended.

The only reason we know that the scoop was "unintentional" is because you're telling us that it is.

Absent that knowledge, I would have called it a foul.

I'm actually going to modify this slightly…

I stand by the above answer if I don't know the player involved.

If I know the player involved and know that they're an experienced, capable jumper, I would probably assume his intent and subsequently call the shot good knowing that it was an unintentional miscue.

I’m leaning toward foul because with a clear miscue on a jump like this, secondary contact is required to jump the ball (with the scoop), so the evidence for secondary contact (and therefore a foul) is clear.

As with any miscue, if there is clear evidence of secondary contact, then the shot is a foul. An example is a follow miscue where the shaft traps the CB after the hit, which is clearly secondary contact and a foul.

What do you guys think?

I would say foul. I have a hard time with some of the rules though. Almost everyone is ok with a masse, but will call push on frozen balls, I guess as long as the participants all know, and play by the same rules ,it really doesn't matter that much. Thanks for the video.

Concerning massé, see my latest video:

Many highly-elevated massé shots are fouls too! 😲

Thanks for spending the time to scienterifically investigate all the nuances of the shots , and the game.
I remember the first time I bought one of Bob Byrnes books My game was a couple of balls better in a few weeks
I'm glad that you and a couple of others have made the inner secrets of the game, accessible to everyone. I would have cut my legs off at one time when I was young , to learn how to play at the highest levels . Thankfully no one wanted to offer me that deal and I spent 40 years chasing knowledge, a morsel at a time. I truly believe that your contribution to the game, is the most important collection of factual material ever available.
