How do you do a jump shot, any links ?

I got a new jump cue & am having trouble figuring it out ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion, before reading ANYTHING would be to go get any video that has a jumpshot in it. Honestly, I learned how to jump from watching The Color Of Money. I'm dead serious. Immitation is the key. Once you see it done, it's not that tough. After that, it's just a matter of practicing until you get more comfortable.

Ironically, since I learned how to jump prior to jump-cues, I actually am much more comfortable jumping with a full-cue and prefer avoiding them altogether. If you're still relatively new to the game, I would suggest working on avoiding jump-shot scenarios rather than performing well in them.

...he has a tremendous video of jumping with his "Varney" from less than one inch away. Very sweet video. Its in the search, but I don't think the link works anymore. Maybe he can show it again.

Jimmy Reid put out a video called "No time for negative" : http://www.bebobpublishing.com/JimmyReid.htm
where he gets into all aspects of the game including kicking and banking(IMO which should be your first option if someone locks you up). He also gets into the mechanics of the jumpshot. Probably the best instructional on the jump shot I have ever seen.

The jump shot is a handy tool to have in your bag, but before you start practising it at your local pool hall you should ask the room owner first as it's hard on the cloth. (if you have your own table, have at her but you may want to use a piece of table cloth under the cue ball so you don't wear holes in the cloth on your table)

Nevel pulls off a 1mm jump shot with the X-breaker shaft.
I can do that as well with my cue...using just the shaft of course. I'll stick a business card between them (thin wise) so they almost touch...and jump & clear the ball by 7 or 8 inches. No problem.;)

I never said you couldn't. X-Breaker is still the bomb. :P:D;)

Thanks for all the links. I will give it a try.

For the record I did search on this one but came up with a bunch of threads on Jump cues, not how to's.

I got a lot to learn:o

you need to remember the quicker the tip leaves the qb the better and more acurate the jump. Befor you practice jumping be sure you have the right equipment. I wouldn't sugest using a screw driver as a hamer. First off if you are going to try jumping be sure to have a shaft with a hard tip. the harder the tip the quicker it leaves the surface of the qb. secondly be sure you are not trying to jump with a (mud) ball. the heavier the qb the harder it is to execute any loft. third the closer you are to the object ball the lighter your jump stick needs to be. Once you have the right tools and understand the basics you should be able to accomplish a jump shot with some practice. Any good video will explain the proper angle to strike the qb at.

is this working for anyone?

I see it.

BTW, the Tom Simpson article is great. For learning to jump, I would say the two things to focus on first is hitting through the center of the ball and not being afraid to stroke through it. Maybe start with jumping a shaft first, then a cube of chalk, and work your way up to a full ball.

anybody notice in the first vid of charlie bryant breaking on xtreme's website theres a 14 ball instead of the 6?

is this a bit more of I'm always better than thou?
