‘Twas about a decade ago that I was glued to the TV watching the championship match between
Efren Reyes and Francisco Django Bustamante. This particular championship was held at the Metropolis Mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa, Philippines. If memory serves me right, the 9-balll event was the third or fourth tournament sponsored by
Motolite, a manufacturer of road transport batteries in the Philippines. The Magician won all the championships in the previous events. And he also emerged victorious in this one.
A sports commentator interviewed Efren Reyes before the awarding ceremony started. The commentator congratulated Efren and noted his incredible pool skills. I can’t exactly remember word for word what the commentator said, but it was in this respect:
“You (Efren) are the best! Barnone! Django couldn’t do anything out there!
You and Django are “contra-pelo!” Every time you and Django clash, it is always you who wins! Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.”
Guess how The Magician replied!
Efren Reyes wouldn’t have none of it! Efren, in front of a live audience and on live national TV, politely highlighted some of Francisco Django Bustamante’s accomplishments in both the local and international circuits. That we should not take anything away from Francisco Bustamante because he always give his all on the pool table. That Django is every bit as good as a pool player as he (Efren). That he (Efren) was just lucky that night and the position of the balls seemed to favor him. That to say he and Django are contra-pelo is absolutely wrong and isn’t right. That Django has beat him and other champions and notable pool players locally and abroad. That Django has beat him countless times too in all types of billiards matches.
Kinda gives one a very good glimpse on
The Magician’s deep sense of humility and love and respect for the game and its players. Efren Reyes could have blabbered on about his various accomplishments in the sport and the champions and notable players he has defeated over the years, or elaborated on the amazing shots he did during the match, etc. – BUT HE DID NOT! Instead, Efren highlighted the various accomplishments of his opponent, including the losses he suffered against Django! This and so much more is why I sincerely believe that Efren Reyes is indeed the greatest player ever to wield a pool cue!
And I kid you not!
