Kamui Chalk

I posted a review a while ago, but I believe I did so in the wrong forum.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=226673

With all the heated arguments on this, I'd decided to purchase one from Tony and determine for myself if it's worth the $25 Kamui is asking.

Adherence:
This thing is not a chalk. It's more like a clay that was designed to adhere onto any tip. Whether it's leather, phenolic, carbon fiber, etc, this chalk will adhere well. Or let me put it this way. I chalked up my Mezz DI pro shaft with Sonic tip with a smooth brushing motion, I broke, continued shooting the rest of the rack with the same cue, and I was able to draw back a few diamonds, stun, follow without much of any problems. For whatever it's worth, I can't get the same amount of draw with BD or Master on the Mezz break cue. I repeated the same experiment with a BK2/phenolic and the results were comparable.

Size:
As most have seen, the Kamui chalk is significantly smaller than BD and Master. However, I believe the Kamui chalk will last significantly longer than BD or Master, cube by cube comparison. By how much exactly? I'm not sure. This Kamui chalk is so thick that you really don't need much of it to apply onto the tip, and once it's on the tip, it stays there for many strokes to come. I broke 10 racks with one application on the DI pro shaft, and shot 30 straight shots with one application on my Z2 shaft. After 30 shots, I barely could see the leather because 90+% of the surface was still well covered by the chalk. Quite impressive, to be honest. Since the chalk arrived in an air-sealed envelop, I'm not sure if the chalk contains any material that may be oxidized over time and becomes unusable. If this isn't the case, one cube of Kamui chalk, despite its size, will definitely last you for a while.

Playability:
Other than the feel aspect of it, I don't experience any difference in terms of playability of this chalk. Does it induce more spin? I think so. For the third time I've had to mention the thickness of this chalk. It's so thick and it feels like you put some bubble gum on your tip so that the contact time is longer. However, I really don't like the playing feel. It's just so different. I'm sure if I took time time to learn, I'll eventually get used to it, but I'd rather spend time learning something else.

Does it worth $25? Yes or no. I believe Kamui definitely spent a tremendous amount of time in research to introduce this revolutionized product to the market. I'm not sure if the chalk is designed such that players no longer need to chalk their tip after every shot, but such idea appears strange to me. I've been so accustomed to chalking after every shot. It's so unconscious to me now I simply don't see the point to change part of my pre-shot routine in order to fit this chalk in. However, since it adheres so well to my Sonic tip, I'll be carrying this chalk everywhere I go and use it for breaking.

As far as the real purpose of using chalk, Kamui had done a very good job with their new line of products.

Guys, lay off CC, for he know not what he post. Ignorance must truly be bliss.

Eric, Thanks for the update!! I only have one question.....

How can a chalk keep your hands DRIER????

Doesn't make sense to me bro...

Hope you're well!

:)

i dont know how but my hands are dryer when i use it, i played again last night, I lost $5500:angry: I couldnt make a ball, and giving up that kind of weight i miss i lose.

The way I chalk a tip all the chalk dust that dosent stick ends up in my hands like Efren, I noticed that years ago, This stuff seems to seal my sweat glands in my hands, I didnt have clamy hands at all bioth times I have used it.

What I didnt like is now that I have used it some more I have seen 2 chunks of it crumble off the sides of it, I dont drill a hole into the chalk, I wipe it straight across but its not holding together very well, its dry here in vegas and its crumbly if it was wet like in the South it seems like it would just fall apart. I am playing again today and will report back. again. I didnt miscue once last night, But I played horrible. I couldnt line up rite-nothing felt right, every shot was a struggle, I did run a few racks but man 8 balls felt like 800. After I pulled up I came back inside and laid down and I fell ZZZZZ instantly, perhaps I was just real tired and didnt realize it before we started playing.

I'm playing again today and will report on the chalk. Its different thats for sure, one thing I can say for sure I like it on hard tips better than soft tips. So it makes sence because Kamui tips run a little harder than normal tips. I'm using it on Triangle tips, I had a new one last night that was a bit softer than the tip from the first session 2 days ago. It dose seem to bite the CB more-for sure. It wont make anyone a better player but it could stop a miscue-thats my current opinion.

more later.

5 hit and the pick playing 8 ball on a 9' box is brutal for me to give up to this guy.

Yeah, I was wondering about this secret "compound" as well. How will your shaft look after a year, or the inside of your pool case, or your joints if it's uglier than other chalk after wiping it on a carpet? What about pool tables and the effect on the cloth or equipment after time?

It sounds like a clay/puddy...wondering if it's even chalk

its not chalk, it is a form of puddy. its gray and the more you grind into it the brighter blue it gets,

its unlike anything I have ever seen. I didnt know it was scarce I havent been online much lately and didnt know anything about it.

I look at it like this, if something works better that a old product, the new product should be used if its necessary. If your playing pool for a living you need every edge you can get. If your betting enough $$$ who cares what chalk costs if it saves you one miscue in 500 games its worth it. The action i've been in the past couple days and tonight every game is a $2200 swing-one miscue can save me $2200 with that in mind I'm not asking how much the chalk costs.

It just depends on how you value things. If you put a low value on things you usually die young, have $$$ problems, health problems etc. When you put a high value on things in life-you live the high life-longer, happier, wealthier and more fulfilled.

I'm not talking about getting ripped off, but until you use a product or have the need for such a product its out of line to judge it. If your banging around balls and dont have anything at stake, just having fun and thats cool to do; then yeah, its crazy to play with $25/chalk. But when it matters $25 aint a thing.

Just curious, when was the last time you lost big bucks just because of a miscue? Ever? I played about 40 hours last week and didn't miscue once, using Master blue. The last time I miscued was on a table length draw shot that I over stroked and mis-hit the cueball. My fault, not the chalk's. But then, as advertised, this new chalk is only for "serious players" so I guess that lets me out, I just wanna have fun. But if it will keep my hands dry...

i have lost big $$ on a mis cue, I lost one game on a skid last night,, but I dont keep a log of such catastrophes. That was yesterday. I play in the present only. I keep that bad vibes out of my mind. Ask any champion(which i sure as heck aint) what happened last rack, they forget about it because that's history. Never remember your losses or mistakes-it will only harm your game. The only thing that matters is the shot your looking at, and after you pull the trigger its forgotten and on to the next shot. That way of thinking will make you a better player-ask any top player. Thats perhaps the best best advice I ever got from a top player. And many top players told me the same thing. only think of whats in the present-the past is the past. Ask Alex, Cotton, Nick, Corey, SVB, JA, Rodney, Ralf, Etc. They all say the same thing. A miss or miscue was last shot its over forget about it. It took me a while to think like that and I'm still having some trouble with that but they are right. Only stay in the present moment. When your playing. I did mention last nights loss for the prupose of this post but far as I care its done, were playing again tonight. I hope That can help you. Hell you might be a much better player than me, i dont know, but i do know that not one champion has ever told me to remember my mistakes.

I agree that whilst playing you should be totally in the moment, however if you are to improve afterwards you need to look back, analyse your mistakes, see where you are going wrong and learn how to fix it.

Selective memory is just one of the advantages of getting old, the older you get the better at it you get. Keep practicing!
:p

My question is as it changes color, does it "GLOW" in low light from Radiation, or is it Pre-Radiation Kamui Chalk? Yes I know that was BAD!;)

Don't let over sensitive people get you down. This made me laugh. Humor is always the best way to get thru tragedy!!

that wwas my way of thinking for years, then i started playing top speed players and said the same thing, everyone of them-without exception said thinking like that will not improve your game a bit, it will cause meore harm than good. How can i rgue with guys who can give me the 5 out and the break? so i listened to them. and they are right, what you did wrong dont matter, the ONLY thing that matters is the shot your shooting and shape for the next shot-the rest is rubbish. It has taken me a long time to think like this but since i have improved.

To small and insignificant!

This is a consumable product. (The chalk that is.) On top of that it is tiny, and I do not know about you but I would forget it at the various poolhalls I frequent.
You can say, " Hey, get one of those cool chalk holders that way you could keep track of it" and I would say "I would lose that also."

In fact I always thought the chalk holders were geeky and never liked any of the various product lines out there. Until I ran into Robin Dobson and her husband in Vegas. I finally broke down and bought a chalk holder that could be considered cool. It was a sharkskin covered belt clip with a magnetic cube and cover (so you didn't get chalk all over your bag). The magnet was stong enough so it was not going anywhere unless you slid it off.
I did not use it till I got back from Vegas. Had to learn how to incorporate into the natural flow of my game. Unfortunately, I never made it that far because guess what happened. I was practicing during lunch and in my haste I left it on the side table when I was packing up.:(
I went back and it was nowhere to be found. That day the counter girl put two bangers right on top of me, so maybe one of them got a nice token. On a side note this particular pool hall has 28 tables and a 2 billiard tables and that day it was empty, but that can be another discussion.

Fatboy buy a gross of it and use it as antiperspirant.
Anyway I doubt in the future that I will try any highend chalk and/or holders.

That was my first thought, at the price chalk hlders will become real popular, i just got a new computer and man im having a hard time typing on it

Yea, but once you get used to it you won't be able to type on the next one.

I hear ya on the chalk holders. I felt like spending some cash on billiards stuff and found a pocket chalker I actually liked. I figured eh why not buy some blue diamond to stick in there. Heck if the chalk never leaves your pocket the price of it seems trivial. That doesn't mean I will pay stripper prices for chalk, but I will pay girls gone wild prices for blue diamond.

im not playing tonight, my back hurts to much, i hit the balls for 10 minutes and was done.

so were planning on playing tomarrow if my back is good. its tough action, real tough. but i love it. so no more reports on chalK/action thread tonight.

i'm gonna practice my typing on my new laptop, its smaller and i keep hitting the caplock button instead of the a, lol

I completely understand about playing in the present and letting go of the last shot, game, etc. But acknowledging the mistake and knowing what happened and making adjustments is essential to learning and growth. You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results....
:p

we plAYED TONIGHT, I STILL CANT TYPE ON THIS NEW MACHINE-SORRY

MY BACK WAS HURTIG BUT I KNEW THAT I WAS LINING UP GOOD AND THOUGHT I COULD WIN A QUICK 5 AND GET EVEN FROM THE OTHER NIGHT, i WONT THE FIRST GAME, LOST THE NEXT 2-3, iT WENT BACK AND FORTH WE PLAYED FOR ABOUT A HOUR, i WAS STUCK $3,000 OR 3 GAMES i ONKY GAVE MYSELF 4 BARRELS TONIGHT CAUSE I KNEW MY BACK WAS A ISSUE.

i CAME WITH A JA OR .BUDDY HALL PRESSURE SHOT THAT GOT ME DOWN ONE GAME DOWN, THE 8 WAS IN THE JAWS AND THE ROCK WAS 6 INCHES AWAY FROM THE 8, IF I MISS, I SPLIT THE WICKET AND THUS WON THE GAME, SO I'M STUCK ONE GAME. HE GETS ALL THE BREAKS AND PICKS 5, I GOT LUCKY HE BROKE DRY AND COULDNT PICK 5 WITH OUT LEAVING ME A OUT, IT WASNT A COSMO, BUT I DID GET OUT, MAN MY BACK WAS ON FIRE. IT WAS A TOUGH OUT EVEN IF I FELT GOOD SO I WAS REAL HAPPY. i PULLED UP EVEN-WE PLAYED 10-12 GAMES MAYBE 14 FOR $1000/GAME 8 BALL

OK BACK TO THE CHALK REVIEW, SINCE WE DIDNT PLAY VERY MUCH TONIGHT IT, IT LOKS ABOUT THE SAME. I'M PLAYING AGAIN TOMARROW, IF MY BCK WAS GOOD HELL I'D STILL BE IN ACTION AND TRIED TO JACK THE BET-I LIKE THE GAME, BECAUSE HE IS GETTING THE BREAKS, BUT DRY BREAKS 8/9 TIMES NEAR AS I CAN TELL, IF HE WAS MAKING BALLS I COULDNT GIVE HIM THAT SPOT, HE PLAYES TOO GOOD. BUT ON THIS BOX ITS A GOOD GAME, BUT I HAVE TO PLAY GOOD TO WIN-PERIOD. i LET UP 1% I LOSE THE RACK,

AFTER A FEW MORE SESSIONS I'M GOING TO TOTAL THE HOURS ON THE CHALK, GO INTO DETAIL ABOT HOW I USE IT, PHOTO IT AND HAVE SOMEONE POST PICS OF IT. i DIDNT MISCUE ONCE TONIGHT, i DID SHOOT ONE SHOT HIT THE ROCK AT 430 REAL SOFT, LOADED IT UP MUCH AS POSSIBLE, I NEEDED THE SPIN TO HOLD IT CLOSE TO THE RAIL WHEN IT HIT THE RAIL BUT NEEDED THE DISTANCE FROM THE SPIN, AND WOW-THAT WAS THE 2ND SHOT THAT COMES TO MIND WHERE THIS CHALK MADE A DIFFERENCE, I COULD FEEL IT. MAYBE JOHN SCHMIT OR ALEX OR RAPHEL(WHO REALLY CAN SPIN THE ROCK) WITH A BETTER STROKE COULD DO IT WITH ANY CHALK, BUT IT DID SEEM TO ME THAT IT HELPED ME AT MY LEVEL OF PLAY-WHAT EVER THAT IS, I TOOK A CHANCE TO MISCUE, IF I DID I WAS SAFE SO I TOOK THE CHANCE, I RAN OUT, THATS A $2000 SWING.

AFTER MORE PLAY I'LL POST PICS. I;M HAVING FUN WITH THIS THREAD/ACTION.

BEST
ERIC

ps: IM $5,000 LOSER SO IT WILL BE MORE FUN WHEN I TURN THIS THREAD INTO A WINNER, AND I WILL. "GET ON ME BURT I CANT LOSE"
