Kamui Tip mushroom and chalking application

Hey everyone. I have a kamui black soft on my McDermott cue that I got new about 6 weeks ago. The tip seems to be flattening out already. My last cue has had all the soft tips that ultraskin had and they seemed to do the same thing to some extint. I am thinking it might be how I am chalking. I am ashamed that after playing for 23 years, I don't know a lot of about tip matienence and such. Any thoughts on the chalking application? I will be posting pics of my tip this evening and even a video on how I chalk to get your feed back.

Thanks everyone in advance.

all tips flatten to some degree as you hit the balls
the softer the tip the more flattening/mushrooming as a general rule
in my experience
..........
your chalking method i dont think plays a role
as for chalking "technique"
you are not drilling for oil.....
rub the chalk over the tip to apply a layer of chalk is how i do it most of the time

If your tip is constantly losing it's shape,
You should try a harder tip.
The way a person cues the ball during normal play will actually shape your tip.
If you shoot hard with middle ball, the tip will naturally flatten out.
If you play with a lot of spin, the cue tip is struck on the edge and will maintain the curved shape....
Believe it or not
Try a harder tip and see if it maintains shape better

It's hard to imagine your chalking technique effecting the mushrooming of the tip. The chalk just isn't hard enough and your hand can't exert enough pressure to have that kind of effect.

Are you using the cue to break also? Do you hit mostly center CB? Hard?

I've had Kamui Black Soft and UltraSkin Soft with no mushrooming on either.

Wel I hit with spin on pretty much every shot. I still get great action on the cue ball with the tip I have now. It just seems to be flatter than others I see.

Soft tips

If I was playing everyday for 12 hrs per day I wouldn't expect any soft tip last longer then 3 months at the most.

Leather doesn't explode when struck, it mushrooms.
It sounds like you are new to soft layered tips.

Everything you explained sounds normal for a soft layered tip.

Chalk should wear like this

And not like this

How you choose to chalk should not impact shrooming on the tip

I started trying softer tips about a year ago. Mostly unltraskins but this is the first kamui tip since the cue came with a kamui tip. I play anywhere from 30-60 minutes around 5 days a week and sometimes 2 hours in a practice session. I do a lot of artistic pool too so that might be a part it.

Get it on a lathe,re-shape, burnish then give it about 1 hour of play time, and re-burnish the sides.... then it should be good to go.

If it continues to flatten out/mushroom, then go to a medium. Just remember, the more time on any Kamui, the harder it gets......my guess is your soft,is now just as hard as a med.

I use SS blacks and have to re-shape maybe, once every month, after the initial prep.
I can go just about 9 months before replacing, and I ALWAYS take 20-25% off the tip before shaping.(This is important imo, to help set-in)

playing 15-25 hr weekly.

If you want to continue using Kamui soft tips, you have to learn the correct maintenance, even without a lathe, get a good shaper, and a piece of leather or a dollar bill to burnish. Just remember not to let the tip get to hot, or the the glue will pop.

Which shapener do you prefer?

I've been using Kamui black softs since they came out. Once to remove the little bit of mushroom early in the tips lifespan by a lathe or whatever. I use the last4erver dime size tip tool on z2 shaft. Hit it lightly every 6-8hrs of play. If I miscue its my fault.
I'm fussy about the shape of my tip as it makes no sense to not have it perfect.

do you break with it??

never mind, I read the whole post, you don't. Kamui when properly maintained are good tips, but you need constant grooming, like most have said, go for a harder tip. Emerald's tips I found to be great tips, medium hard, but you get a ton of action off them. I've tried them all, I even wrote a little review on emeralds and hirano's. Old Moori's were good, original kamui's are good.

I might look into the emerald tips. I do a lot of stroke shots so something helps get a lot of action with the cue ball helps. (besides my stroke)

Those are pretty decent. Swedish made I believe. I have one similar and a different shaper with the permanent grit.

I keep a little plastic one with sand paper in the case.

I just bougth 3 Players HXT shafts. They came with a Black kamui Soft. I was hoping that I could give them a good rating. Play not too bad but not much different or better than any other softs I have tried.

With a small diameter, I prefer to use a dime shape. They wouldn't hold that if the world was coming to an end.

Not much sense in fidgeting with them as the only thing that will happen is grinding them to nothing in a month.
