Maybe this is old news but I just called my local billiard store and asked if they have any Kamui tips in stock. The guy there told me that Kamui went out of business? This is new to me but is that true?

I highly doubt its true, but there are other people on this forums who can give you a more definitive answer.

Their website is still up & John is scheduled for the BCAPL National Championships...

Yesterday we got in some blacks & clears, and John didn't say anything the other day.
Someone might be confused

Absolutely not true. They even have a new tip launched recently, the "Clear" tip. Great product.

They also have the Beta Chalk cubes, more than a third larger than the "old" chalk.

Feel free to contact their US Office:

Most likely confused. There was speculation or rumors going around that Moori was out of business. Maybe that is where he got it from.

To echo what JP said, 100% not true.
I don't know which company your local store was thinking of but it definitely isn't Kamui.
Anyone with any genuine fears can contact Kamui direct in Japan at http://www.kamuibrand.com/billiard-en/?page_id=51

John was just interviewed yesterday during the Hard Times tournament. He said they had shut down a guy who was selling counterfeit Kamui's

other than that it was business is good, life is good... clearly not out of business

What tip are you needing?

Kamui are going strong and also trying to keep on top of the growing number of unscrupulous counterfeiters that see a quality product and try to make a quick buck.

Moori has had some issues over the last couple of years with inconsistent batches of hardness due to the absence of the owner as his health fails. Still a quality product but the important job of choosing the best/appropriate leather to use during manufacture is difficult to teach. They are still producing...as far as I know. Like any business with an aging and much loved patriarch, sometimes family has to come first.
