Why don't you possibly consider bumping up the entry fee by like $20-30 instead of making us use quarters. Then we could use the good cue ball. It was very sad to see you put the good new balls out...but we had to use the barbox cueball. I know a lot of players would be delighted. Seriously...this is a wonderful tournament...but the only one that doesn't open the tables & give us the red circle. Just throwing it out to you for consideration.

I agree with KV on this. If you are worried about losing money, just take the amount of $ you make in quarters and divide that by the # of players. Make that the green fees. With 70 or 80 players, for a $15 green fee, that would be an extra $1050 - $1200.

It is alot easier with the tables opened (just my opinion).

We have tried using the red circle in the past and opened the tables, but we got more complaints from the players. For what reason we don't know. They would rather split quarters at 25 cent each. It may be because there is so much good competition that you never know who is going to be there at the end. Would love your suggestions on how to get some good stakers there?
Thanks, DeAnna

First...anyone who complains about an open table & red circle cueball is clueless...they should have their cue taken away for at least 90 days.
Second...you want suggestions on how to get good stakers there...well what is a good staker and how is that involved with a tournament?

Having good stakers there ups the player auction, and when you up the amount of money in the player auction you get more players. It is an important part of the tourney. Last time 1st place in auction was about $1300 if it would have been $2000 it would attract alot more players. Kevin, I hope to see you again at our tourney in June. Until then....Good Luck!!

Stakers hmmm....sounds like you my dear are in need of some more barbox champs with actually bankrolls in their pockets who aren't shy about investing in there talent...or lack there of...LOL!!!

Bump that have it on 9 ft tables and u can change the entry fee..how far r u from charlotte ..?? i jus might come up .to play or try to play..

about 45 minutes from Charolette. Would be great to meet you! If nothing else just come check us out!

Anyone that would object to using a red circle cue ball dosnt know much about real pool, thats right this a barbox tournament.

Just a note..... Yes this is a barbox tourney, but one of the best tourneys in the southeast. Players such as Shannon Daulton, Larry Nevel, Mike Davis, Tony Watson, And Derek Leonard (just to name a few) all have played. A lot of them promote our tourney because it is such a good one. Don't knock it just because it is on barbox tables!

GOOD LUCK Diana.........hope it all works out for you........i still dislike @#boxes

I love barboxes. Its that freakin' heavy cueball that I can't stand.
I attend plenty of quality barbox events (like Kernersville) except the difference is all other ones allow red circle cue balls to be used.

This whole cue ball thing gets me! Everyone is using the same cue ball. No one has an advantage. If you can play pool you could use a basketball for a cue as long as everyone else was using it too! I play with both the red circle and the heavy cue, I just adjust my game to what I am playing with. People who are serious about their game learn how to play it! No offense to be taken by anyone.

I agree. If everyone has to use the same type cueball, what difference does it make to use heavy or red-dot? It's not really that much of a difference anyway.

If you are forced to use the cueball ..sure you obviously need to adapt......but given the choice.....i wont I personally wont play there

Hi mrsboss,

The reasons that it does make a difference whether you use a red circle cue ball or regular barbox cueball are:

Red circle balls are made at alot more exact tolerances than regular barbox cueballs, so they roll much more consistently. If you ask any "A" level player (probably even "B" level) which ball that they prefer, 99% (IMO) will tell you that they had rather play with a red circle ball. Position on a bar table has to be more exact because there is less surface area, and the balls are closer together or clustered. Much more precision is required than on a 9 foot table. Most old barbox cueballs were made with lead weights in them, and all were not exactly centered. You could roll the same barbox cueball down the same table, and one time the cueball would drift to the left, and the next time it would drift to the right, with the problem not being the table, but the cue ball. When a player needs to play precise position, he or she needs to have confidence that the cueball will not drift. Only recently have they taken any concerns about making barbox cue balls where they rolled somwhat consistently.

Also, barbox cueball usually always differ in weight from one table to another. I have played tournaments where the differences in cueball weight were significant from one table to the next. Again, with the precision that a player needs, if the cueball on barbox #1 weighs 5-10 grams or more than barbox #2, it makes a difference.

It is not just that everyone is playing with the same cueball. Pool is a game where confidence in your stroke and in your judgement are required. Anything that makes a player feel less than 100% confident in his abilities can ruin your concentration and your game.

I hope that your turnout is great, and I am going to try to attend myself. These are just some reasons that many players will not attend a tournament where regular barbox cueballs are used.

Mike

Mr. Templeton...I have NEVER read a more true post...well done.
Many players prefer not to play without the good cueball. When you play everywhere with the same ball and know how much stroke is needed to draw it exactly 2 feet...why torture yourself with a ball that just STOPS with the same stroke? Plus a lot of players spin/throw balls in and with that heavier ball...that all changes. I know when I played there last time I simply had to play much more center ball and stop shots. I heard several players talking about not drawing it...choosing to always play follow instead...because the cueball wanted to go forward on most all shots.
If the barbox with the weighted ball is all you play on or all you have access to then thats one thing. But to have a large tourney and want people to travel...you need to offer better equipment. Even here in Charlotte, most rooms that have barboxes will open the table, give you a red circle...and put you on time. Even the little joints open the tables and give league players the good cueball. I was impressed the other night at a little tourney in Huntersville when they opened the tables and put out red circles for use. There is a reason Diamond designed there barboxes to use the standard red circle...they just play better. Even in the APA city tournament...for years...they always used red circle cue balls on the rented barboxes.
I think simply MrsBoss is under pressure from the regulars who are forced to use the barbox ball all the time...not to change for the tourney. It can't be a money issue...all players would gladly pay more green fees as opposed to feeding quarters and having to get a pocket full of change before each match. Sadly I know of 4 players that told me they were not going back just because of the cueball. The tourney has the potential to be huge like the Smoky Mtn...everyone is aware of the huge waiting list of players who can't even get into the SMS.
