I just have to say Kevin makes a great cue for the money! I have owned a lot of cues in 50 yrs.of playing pool, from $50. to $5000. Kevin made me the best player I have ever owned, and if he wants to post a pic of it, its the full slice boco into maple 4 point. I also bought one of his b/j's after I had the player for a while, and it jumps better and easier than any jump cue I have owned. I also use it to break when I play 9ball and have no problem pocketing balls AND controlling the cue ball.

Kevin DID NOT ask me to write this. I just think that there are some guys out there like Kevin who can give you a lot more and better playing cue for your hard earned $$$. All my playing cues today are built by people who actually play. I think you have a far better chance of owning a cue that plays well when you buy a cue from someone who can play some.

Steve, first let me say thank you for taking the time to write this...it means a lot to me. Having players such as yourself appreciate my work is what makes it all worthwhile. Knowing that you've owned & played with many SW, Bluegrass, and even a Szam if I remember correctly, is the highest compliment I can receive. The fact that you continue to play with my cues makes me very proud. Helps too that I know you are quite a strong player. There is no real secret formula to building a performance cue...I can honestly say that I feel I owe it to some other makers before me that make jam up great playing cues. In the years before I built my own, I played with many of the finest, SW, DPK, Cogs, Bobby Hunter, even Wes Hunter too. Wes once made me a sneaky that I was sure was full of magic pixie dust. Playing with the finest performance cues I could get my hands on has allowed me to be able to know what a top shelf performance cue should feel like. Its a copycat world & I've just copied the things I like from many great makers. Once again, thank you & I'm very happy you like my cues.:)
As per request, here are a few pics of your player...

I have mentioned that someday I will own a KV.
I recently traded a Joss for a KV conversion. It may not be an original hand made but its still a Varney. It had some battle scars so I sanded and did a refinish and it plays pretty sporty. It originally had a hand rubbed satin finish.
I have a bar box tourney this Sunday and my KV will be with me.

Nice looking cue, but this thread belongs in the review section.

So do about 100 other threads :)

I have owned 4 different KV cues. They have all been great playing cues and I have owned and played with some high end cues.

My current playing cues are a set from KV that are being refinished by him currrently.

Can't wait to get them back in my hands!!

I agree that Kevin does make a nice solid cue and they are hard to beat for the price!!

I also agree that in most cases buying a cue from a builder who is also player will get you a better playing cue, but in some cases it doesn't matter look at Tad!!!!!:)

I currently don't own a full Varney. But I got a 1/2 Varney! Kevin made me a sweet shaft for an old Heubler butt I have. It sure plays sweet. Someday I'll own one of Kevin's. But for now the Ole' Heubler just plain pots balls. I love it. Kevin you make a mean shaft at a great price.

Varney Magic Cue,still had the goods "Bigtime!"

I will make this short and sweet.I finally had a chance today to hit with my Varney for the first time.I hit both with Kevins shaft and the matching OB Classic shaft.I've played some high grade pool with some fantastic cues, but for my style of play which is simple position and more finness pool this cue is on a planet of its own. Both shafts played beyond great. When I didn't think it could get any better, well it did!If you enjoy trying new cues, and is a truly serious pool player, treat yourself to a Varney, your game deserves it!Takecare Guys:smile:

Thanks for posting pics of my cue Kevin. It still looks the same, just a little blue on the shaft.

The reason I started this thread is that I feel that there are a lot of cue builders, like Kevin Varney, who make cues that play jam up and don't get enough recognition. We all can't afford SW's, Searing and Szamboti's. I like to actually play with my cues, not just sit and stare at them. My wife bought me a Joe Whitten case for my last birthday that cost more than the cues I carry in it, and it goes with me to all the tournaments I play in. Its the nicest case I've ever owned, but its never helped me pocket a ball. Of all the cues I've ever owned and played with, I can state without a doubt the three that played the best for me are my Varney pictured above, my Richard Harris Bluegrass, and a cue I wish I hadn't sold by Keith Josey. The Varney plays the best for me but the Bluegrass is real close.

All I'm sayin' is if a guy or gal only has x amount of dollars to spend, don't feel that you can't get a cue that just might be the best one you ever played with and might help put some extra $$$ in your pocket too.
