Kid Delicious Antics

Where did Danny get this nickname? What is delicious about his time consuming style?

He to me was agonizing to watch going through his nervous repetative motions before he was able to shoot.

Perhaps his style will catch on - for it was said that he is coming out with instructional tapes. His stroke/grasp with rippling fingers is most unorthodox. His "colorful" style though may be good for ESPN ratings.

His style is so slow thay he will force ESPN to have 3 game finals. Shoots great but sure is boring.

He gave the nickname to himself. Per his interview with Inside Pool mag a few years ago

My guess is that you've never seen Johnny Archer or Charlie Williams SLOW play... makes the Kid look FAST

I see Danny's instructions/cues and videos for sale in Billiards Digest.. not cheap.

I'll say one thing about Basavich- He doesn't give up on a shot. He can get down on a ball and stroke it 50 times, while I have had to re-adjust my focus 3 times watching it, and he has still got it on lock. Not trying to be rude, but Danny is a big boy, and it's a cool change up for tv. It just goes to show that anyone can play this game, being skinny, fat, tall, short, white, brown, black. And he's got personality too! lol.. Danny is a big dude, with a big game.

Danny is a slow player with a big heart. He has enormous respect for his fellow competitors, and I think they can sense it. He loves to interact with the paying fans, and he usually wears a smile on his face. I wish he played a little faster, but Danny's got a charismatic way about him that explains why most of his fellow pros and most of the fans really like him. I wish him continued success.

Danny's a hell of a player. But, his antics are obvious shark moves. He shot just as well under the 30-second shot clock. Why can't he shoot without taking timeout after timeout? He dragged his earlier match with Bustamante thru the next session. He did the same against Owen.

In a Billiard Digest Mag., There was a feature artical about Danny Basavich which explains pretty much everything you are inquiring about. Danny is a really good person and is just trying to get a nut with the instructional tapes and cues...

Danny lost to Corey Deuel in California because of the 30 minute shot clock!

Man, with that shot clock one runout could last 4,5 hours :D

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Anyway, haven't seen Danny play, but looking forward to getting some tapes... and fastforward during it :) He seems to be getting successful in tournaments... maybe year 2005 will be his final breakthrough.

I believe it had something to do with breaking some guy in NY they called Kid Vicious. Someone starting calling him Kid Delicious and it stuck. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how the story goes.

Meant to add in my last post.
The last Joss tournament held in Quincy, MA, I got to watch Danny play and he is one straight shootin' mo-fo. Talking about his slow play reminds of his match with Keith, JAM I'm sure you remember this one. Slow is not the word but talk about entertainment. Worth the price of admission watching and listening to those two. Keith got him on the hill.
What I did notice however, was a couple of matches later he was playing a local shortstop and sped right through him. He showed he can play fast and loose if he wants to but I think he does that against better players to try and gain any edge he can. Seemed like a really nice guy and is one heck of a player. I agree that he is sometimes painfully slow but I would watch any match he played just to try and learn something.

I was talking with Scott the tournament director about the pace of play against Gabe. Scott could not watcht he whole match. I thought the
pace was okay. Each player took a Timeout I believe and at the start neither player was running out but instead playing safe. One game easily had
3-4 shots a piece on an early ball and then Gabe hooked himself on the six and they had another safety battle.
Kid D kicks really well and so does Gabe. I think in that match I was reminded to take dead aim when kicking.

In the last few games I think Gabe played a little too quickly and Danny a little slower. Of course Gabe was on the hill and Danny needed a few at that
time.
How about the Frankie Hernandez and Rodney Morris match. It was over
really quickly. Neither of them waste any time.
