Very good resale value from what I have seen on here in the last few months...not sure about the cue playability or the maker. Makes a nice cue from what I seen as far as looks.

when he first started making cues, he was the hottest thing on the market.

I have had a few. They were all quality made, looked good, played outstanding, and seemed to retain their value pretty well. One Kikel I had years back falls into the "I wish I had kept it" category. In my opinion, getting into a Kikel is definitely a positive experience.

Well, I have a different opinion. He made me a cue once that was balanced 21.5 inches from the butt. The cue felt like a brick in you're bridge hand. It was the worst playing cue that I ever had (including bar cues). What's more, I ordered a 19oz. cue and it came out 20oz. He was extremely uncooperative and unwilling to find any compromise. I ended up selling the cue at a loss (owned it about a week).

On a side note...Kikel makes the rounded points I guess with pantograph or cnc. The only cues that I will buy are spliced.

my 2 cents worth.

Doug

Kikel Cues

I like them. I have played with one since 99. The balance is what has me hooked. I am sorry someone had a bad experience with him. That is the first negative comment I have heard. Except from those who don't like CNC.
Cues are a personal thing IMHO. I want to see how my AZB ER cue plays.

I'll add a little to this:

Kikel

Dave might just pick the FINEST wood specimens.
Dave may also create the most FLAWLESS finish.
Dave may just make a great hitting cue for accuracy, the RIGHT amount of deflection.

Dave may be DIFFICULT.

Resale value:

He will make exceptional points up/down w/ arrowheads (I think it might be a favorite for him) Think about silver, ivory, pink ivory wood, gaboon ebony when trying for high-end resale. He truly does fine work with these materials ('plastic' perfect) & don't let your ideas get too busy, Dave's personally created designs have pulled down more moolah than you can believe ... let him be the ARTIST that he is.
Let him figure out the balance, you just tell him weight, diameter, taper, length, type of wrap & you'll probably like the hit. Try to tell him how to make a cue & you may just be ready to fist-fight with him before it's all over  ...

All that said, I should mention I have made more than a few stones peddling a few of his cues.

Now if you are talking really fancy (5000K & up), you are on your own, but I'd follow the same rules and be prepared to walk on eggshells. :(

I tried Purdman's Kikel and played very well. The wrap was one of the best I have seen. Definately a nice cue.

never had a whole Kikel. But I had him make a shaft for a junky old Hoppe. He matched it up well. Cue hits alright w/ the Kikel shaft. He didn't charge me enough and did a different taper. I took it into his shop myself and had no problems dealing w/ him. That was in the late '80's. I couldn't come close to affording one of his cues then. Maybe someday I will have to buy a whole one. :)

A friend of mine has a Kikel that plays very well. I met Dave Kikel at the cue show they had in Park City, Utah last year, he was truly a gentleman and very knowledgeable. Salamander's complaint is probably the only one I've ever heard about his cues.
