I'd like to have seen that episode. I like that show. $15K for a walnut root ball isn't a rare thing, though. If it's wrinkled & burled and large, they go for tens of thousands of dollars to veneer outfits and fine gun stock builders. Gotta be really good, though. Wood like that is only seen in stuff wealthy people have. $150,000 over/under shotguns, heirloom hutches, Rolls Royce dash boards, etc. Somebody's gotta make that stuff and those folks have to get those materials somewhere. When they find it, they pay for it. And we never see it. If you are ever in Las Vegas, check out Fatboy's custom walnut office and his elephant ear paneled walnut desk. You'll see my point.

yea thats why i laughed when the guy said that the 15k was in old days dollars....meaning it would be worth well over a hundred grand today.

when i do go visit eric I'll be sure and get him to show me that room.

walnut is also my favorite american hardwood by far.........cherry is great too but my vote is for the walnut.

walnut

I grew up in East Texas and in the mid to late 50's there was a man fishing in a small boat in the creek behind our small farm. We had a huge
walnut tree about 8 feet in dia, with a big burl on it. This man worked at a gun stock company somewhere in the midwest and wanted that tree from my dad. I had used that tree for a deer stand for years as the limbs were huge and you could sit on them and be comfortable and it overlooked the creek and several wildlife trails. Well my dad inveited the man to lunch as he did anyone in those days and they talked about that tree and finely the man offered my dad 5000.00 for the tree and he sold it. About a month later here comes an 18 wheeler and another one with a dozer on it and they cut the tree and dug up the burl and took the whole tree or at least everything that was over 6 inches in dia. It was all they coud do to haul it away on an 18 wheeler. I was a small guy then and watched for three days as they did this. Of course they ate everymeal with us all 5 of them. After it was over my mother said they ate 1/4 of the money up.
We had cattle and ate a lot of steak and you would have thought the workers getting that tree had never had a steak. We ate it at every meal.
Anyway sorry for the long post just interesting now as I would love to have the tree and the land.

Walnut

Do all walnut trees have great value? Is it just the root ball that you guys are speaking of or is all of the wood valuable? Educate me.

not nearly as much as a walnut burl will have....but you'll find curly walnut also that thats valuable......walnut is one of the premier american hardwoods....its valuable
