The age of the Rat Pack—late 1950s early 1960s—is romanticized, but there is good and bad with every generation.

So if he couldn’t open a reincarnation of the Sands Hotel and Casino, "A pool room seemed like the next rational step," Adam DeVoe said, and so King Smiley was born in Fort Edward, NY ---> KingSmileyBilliards.com.

Two years ago, DeVoe and his wife realized the closest pool room to them was too far away, and timing is everything, as they say. He was a former news broadcast man, and she, a grant writer. They managed to purchase a building in Fort Edward and then bought Devine's Billiards, a local supply company, to furnish the new pool room. Adirondack Billiards on Glen Street in Glens Falls was a hot spot for 15 years before it closed in 2008. Owner Joe Stanislowsky sold DeVoe the tournament-sized tables at a savings of about $10,000 compared to what they would have cost new, DeVoe said.

"These are what the pros play on," DeVoe said. "It’s the difference between golf and mini golf." The raised stage was perfect for an elevated bar area. Playfully dubbed "The Loser’s Lounge," that’s where the less skilled players go to watch the action when they’re out. The building had a large kitchen, which DeVoe upgraded with commercial equipment. The bar serves only beer and wine so the booze doesn’t overshadow the billiards. "I try really hard to have it not be a bar. It’s really about the pool here," DeVoe said.

This looks like it might be a good stop on a local regional tour, e.g., Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, Joe Tucker's and American Billiard Club league, et cetera.

DeVoe, also a painter, created much of the artwork around the billiard hall, using the colors and geometrical shapes of 1960s design. The lounge area that some call "Frank Sinatra’s dressing room" has a vintage sofa and chairs he picked up from a friend’s grandmother’s basement, and a bumper pool table by the bar. Cue sticks are mounted on the wall at King Smiley Billiards in Fort Edward.

I just stumbled on this pool room last week while visiting my aunt last week. I played in their tournament and luckily won it. They do races to 1 and quadruple elimination. After each round is a re-draw. I had a blast -- very good equipment. Glen Falls is literally in the middle of nowhere.... what are the odds of you making a post on this place?!?

Adam is a class-act--- SUPER nice guy. He took really good care of me. Anyone in upstate NY looking for a NICE place to play, King Smiley's is definitely the place to play.

I heard they also do skills challenges based on Dr. Dave's Billiards University drills -- as a tournament. Cool idea.

Unreal how you made a post on this place since I was just there, randomly.

Triple elimination? They did QUAD when I was there.... maybe because I was there? They redraw after each game, race to 1 ---- no bracket.

Oh, it was coz you were there all right. They were having such fun laughing at you that they didn't want you to leave. In fact, they even let you win... just to keep you around a little longer.

That's exactly what happened. Cause I was just thinking I never heard of quad elimination.

I had a good time no matter what. It's a super spot. Just to clarify, lots of places adjust the model when a random shows up...wasn't saying I play good, I suck.

Thank you for the review of King Smiley Billiards. I know I am going to check it out en route to Turning Stone Casino. It sounds like a really cool place.

Thanks again for the contribution to the thread! :)

You may wanna check your route. I think Glens Falls is over more in the northeastern part of the state. I was there when I was a kid, we went to Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain.
On a side note, why was Spidey posting yesterday and now it says banned under his forum handle???
