kingwood verses cocobola

How related is Kingwood to Cocobola? I have purchased a 'cocobola' fullsplice blank and then ordered some small pieces of coco to use as trim rings, and it didn't match. I then was at Woodcraft this weekend and saw some pieces that match the blank perfectly, not only in color, but grain work also. Only they are being sold as Kingwood. I bought a piece then scraped off the wax of all the pieces I had of coco, and the kingwood piece and the only perfect match was the kingwood. Are they so closely related that they can be interchanged, or is it possible that someone mislabled or just doesn't know the difference?
The coco blank has an orangy grain with blackish lines runing thru it.
I like the look, I'm just concerned about the toxicity of the dust, and proper handleing of it.

my guess is that Woodcraft mislabeld it.i bought some 2x2x24Brazilian from them and never really paid attention to it,but my buddy said to watch out that he bought some from Woodcraft and it was Zircote.sure enough i took it to the saw and it was Zircote.they refunded me part of my money for the cost difference between the two.i did get a smaller piece of Brazilian from them that is incredible.it was only 14" so i used it as a handle, but it is one of the nicest piece of Brazilian i have ever seen.never know what you might find at the Woodcraft.

This post is useless without pictures.....!..........just kidding.
They're both in rosewood family photo album. Depending on the region coco comes from it can vary in color quite a bit. Any kingwood I've ever worked with always has had a more purple hue to it. Grain lines can look the same as coco on some pieces.

Grain, weight, texture & such are similar, but kingwood is much more like tulip than it is coco. Some mexican coco will have a purpleish look similar to kingwood when it's fresh cut but soon turns orange. Kingwood starts out purple & slowly darkens to a brown. Likely if you have orange kingwood, it was mislabeled.

Well, I did a lot of cutting today, as I'm on Vaca, and turned the 2 small squares down and found that the kingwood was purplish and the coco turned orangy. I took before and after pics. The kingwood is the one on the right, in both pics. I also put the fullsplice blank in the first pics to show how much it looked like the kingwood, before turning. I guess the wax changed how the colors looked and confused me. Thanks for all the info guys, but one more queston. Is the dust from Kingwood as bad/toxic as Coco? I really like the color of it and may use it for some cues.

I don't know how toxic kingwood is, but it's never had any affects on me. Cocobolo makes my nose run & eyes burn, sneezing, etc. Kingwood smells like flowers or perfume :)

Coco is God's curse to woodturners.

Ebony is my problem wood.i love the smell of Coco(in small doses),but Ebony burns my noes and makes my eyse water, then leaves me congested all day.

I have bad, year round allergies, so even though even something like maple is pretty safe, it leaves me congested and sneezing for a full day after cutting a bunch. Something like Coco really makes me paranoid. Today was the first time cutting any, and I had my filter mask, a face shield(for flying chips) longsleeve shirt, gloves, and a shop apron on, plus an air cleaner running and a dust collector hose right at the router, and I still was worried about a reaction to the dust. After I finish this one, I may just sell the 6-8 pieces I have and not deal with it. I don't like worrying about something like that. It's a great looking wood, but I don't think it's worth the worry.

They are both dangerous, Coc is one of those that it doesn't hurt you today as much as it will tomorrow. Story on ebony is one maker mad a hair beret for his wife out of it, and like every woman does, she put it in her mouth while doing her hair, Off to the hospital she went. (POISON)
