custom knives

Chris,
I collected custom folders for some time. It becomes an addiction. Before you do anything, join the USN, Usual Suspects Network. A great forum and wonderful people. Learn about knives and makers to determine who you like. Custom knives, at least the really good ones, are very hard to get from the maker. It is like getting a SEaring or Szamboti. Emerson custom, Hinderer, Munroe, Strider, Fraley, Galyeon custom, Onion, represented my main interest, but I had many others. I sold most over the last few years, but have kept some customs made by Ernest Emerson.

I will soon be selling custom Emersons, cqc 5, cqc 7, cqc 8, and one of 9 of the original cqc black 6's from the first USN gathering in 09.

Check it out and GL.

Phil

There is a good cuemaker that makes custom knives and posts on this site but I can't think of his name right now.

i think one of the most revered every day carry [edc] knives is a sebenza by chris reeves.

you don't [i think] need a $5,000 jody samson for any practical purpose and not even for knife collecting.

there are many great knife makers today. and i mean really Great!

personally, i recently bought a Dawson fixed blade skinner that is a $290 knife for only $190 including an ivory micarta handle and a kydex sheath for only $190. a steal at that price. and for me a treasure at any price.

for an EDC folder there are so many to chose from. the one i use as an EDC is a Sage II. and i have many to choose from. but for someone just getting started i would suggest as i said a sebenza 25, either small or large. they run about between $350 [small] to $425 [large] depending on size. and they are treasured by all who have one.

that will give you imho great knowledge in what a knife can be.

if you learn to sharpen it properly, it will last you a lifetime and be a legacy for someone in your family. it is that good, to say the least.

all the best,
smokey

Mike, (Meridian Blades}, posts in the Ask the cue maker and machinery forum.

Google Meridian Blades and have a look. He makes some nice knives.

Been thinking about getting a nice filleting knife from him soon.

He posts under MeridianBlades.

If you have a design idea, he will make whatever you wish and he uses some pretty nice impregnated wood for his handle wood.

Serious collector be it Pool Cues, Knives, or ? They collect some time have millions tied up in collection for bradding rights. come on down in January to the Barret Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, and see people spend million on steel with wheels. Cars that will never be driven on the interstate.

I bought a David Boye custom made knife back in '79 at a gun show in San Francisco where I actually met him and picked out the knife I wanted. He had only been making knives for a few years at that time and seemed like a great guy. Well, I just had the knife refinished by Francine's Etched Knives whom I learned performs refinish of all David Boye knives and this was the best part..........get this........ the refinish work on older, collectible Boye knives is performed for free.

I sent Francine my knife and insured it for $100 because I just randomly picked that amount while at the Post Office shipping the knife to her. I just received the knife from being refinished a couple of weeks ago and Francine informed me that my knife is actually very rare and irreplaceable. She insured the knife for $1000 when she returned it and said she couldn't tell me how much the knife is truly worth but $1000 was simply the minimum amount she would use for insurance coverage. Anyway, it's a great sheath knife w/ leather case and the knife has amazing balance and feel. David Boye's design for knives, sort of a wedge shape in your hand, is original and different from other knife-makers and he apparently became a well respected knife-maker.

The notion of selling or trading this knife had never crossed my mind until I saw your post about custom knives. I hadn't any idea my knife had a high value until Francine Etched Knives informed me about it being rare. Maybe you know something about Boye's reputation as a knife-maker but mine is a sweetheart of a knife.....and it's all shiny & bright and sharp as a razor after just being refinishing.

Looking for a custom folder or fixed blade? I've been trying to get one from Casey for a couple of years: http://www.kevincaseycustomknives.com/
Cooper has a great site that features photos from most of the magazines and gives a great overview of a lot of custom makers: http://sharpbycoop.com/jalbum/index.html
Try going to one of the big NY/NJ shows: http://fiftyfiftyproductions.net/

Custom knifes are very regional. Some may be popular in one area and not in another. Antique knifes are easier to turn and make money. Case are the most popular knifes on the market and easier to sell. Custom knifes are a much harder sale. I grew up around knifes all my life. My dad is a big collector.

All those nice skinning knives, and expensive too. And here I thought I was doing ok with my 50 dollar Buck knife.
