Larry Nevel - prostethic?

For those who weren't aware, Larry Nevel had his leg amputated within the last calendar year due to medical complications, and was playing at Derby from a wheel chair.

I think Larry dd pretty well in the bank tourney, winning a few rounds, but something happened in the One Pocket, Larry got really frustrated, and he did not rebuy after his one pocket loss.

It looked a lot like Larry was simply incapable of physically executing his desired shots from his wheelchair.. And was getting very frustrated over that fact.

Is there anyone on the forums close to Larry, that could let us know if he is looking into, or has the option for a prosthetic? At one point, I was Facebook friends with his wife, but we had a falling out, and besides, I don't think they are together any more.

I'd really like to know if there is any possibility for Larry to reach his former level of play with a prostethic. Seems like if a prosthetic is an option, we might be able to look into some fundraisers, depending on the cost. Just a thought...

I saw Larry playing and didn’t want to stare but I couldn’t tell if it was above or below the knee. The reason I ask is my handicapped buddy plays from a knee scooter with a swivel pad which has allows him to stand for all his shots. He just rolls up, locks hand brake and swivels towards table. That could ea great option if Larry’s knee could support his weight.

He said at DCC it would take several more weeks of healing etc for him to be ready for a prosthetic

That's really sad...I watched him play Efren 9 ball at the Derby in 2017 if I'm not mistaken. He sure breaks the balls hard.

it'll take a lil time to adjust to his new leg and looking at the table like he did for many years but i bet he'll be playing jam up in short order

He said he was just waiting to heal up enough for a prosthetic and I assume would need rehab with it etc.

Hopefully he gets one of those legs he can adjust the tightness on himself. I read a quora discussion that had a prosthetics type doctor saying this is a better option for any amputee that competes in any sort of physical competition.

If he ever needs help paying for the prosthetic I would chip in on it with you Russ. Let me know if anything materializes and shoot me a PM.

I remember cracker John bad wreck in 2004 in Tulsa, broke him up and lost a leg......great player last time I seen him he’d wheel around hop up on one leg and run the shit out the balls!

The true chair bound players impress the hell out of me always have its very difficult even for a highly skilled player to do.

Being in a wheelchair changes everything about pool execution and I'm not surprised Larry couldn't play up to his standards that way.

On a prosthetic, on the other hand, I would think he could definitely regain his previous level, although it would take some time to work back up to it after his stint in the chair.

If paying for the prosthetic is an issue for him, I would also be willing to make a donation.

I have a friend I played one pocket with (when I lived in VA) who had a prosthetic leg.

Let me tell you, the process is really painful. There are lots of adjustments that need made. He's play 40 minutes or so and need to sit down, take off the leg...make a few adjustments..and then start again.

It's an on-going process of appointments, adjustments at the Doc, pain management, etc. And this gent was fortunate to be retired, fairly wealthy, and had all of the time/money in the world to take care of this stuff and, even so, I saw how tough it was for him physically (regarding pain, more than anything).

I think after several years of endurance it DID get better. And his stance was/is good with the prosthetic and he plays long hours of pool daily. So, Larry could get 100% of his game back once the Docs get the prosthetic right. I wish him the best.

I’m in also....there have been a couple pros in our history that lyes well with an artificial
leg.....modern methods, I expect, will make it easier.
