las vegas open

You don't think both will be in US Open? Is Filler out-4-life from WNT? Surely not.
If the WPA continues to ban players who play in Matchroom majors (because they lack WPA sanctioning), then it might be Filler who keeps Filler out of the US Open. And if he doesn't play in Matchroom majors, it seems very unlikely that he will appear in any more Mosconi Cups. Or Reyes Cups.

Why would anyone in their right mind stay at the Rio? Across the street at the Gold Coast, they are actually happy to see you and the food is not only edible but quite tasty and at reasonable prices. And they have real coffee, even that weird European expresso stuff.

Example: The last time I tried to check in at the Rio: After a 15-minute wait: "Go away. Come back at 6 and we might have a room for you. You should use the kiosk." At the Gold Coast, one person ahead of me in line, then a smiling desk person: "Hello, sir! Checking in?"
Spot on. Was staying at Rio last time as didn’t have the option. 40 bucks for a breakfast dish including orange juice and coffee and tips. And checking in was much worse than you described… 🤯
Wandered off to Gold Coast a couple of times and it seemed equally nice. Except there were maybe 10x more slots 😝

At the Gold Coast, their restaurant Ping Pang Pong used to have a great dim sum lunch. Been about seven or eight years since being there.

even if he wasn't to have/want a tour card i think he could still play two MR majors
In theory, I think he could play them all by participating in the qualifier system, but by what other line of reasoning are you sure he'd be ensured a spot in any of the Matchroom majors?

Of course, none of us are sure what's coming, so we must play the wait and see game.

i think he could only play two (by qualifying of course) if he wasn't to have a tour card. i don't know if it's a rule they enforce though

SVB will be there for this 1P match. Haven't seen anything on if he will be in the 10 Ball....

I thought they just remodeled the Rio?
It was the same way at the west gate . We were there for acs. I don’t mind paying for good food But over $60 for breakfast was out of control and that was just the start of it. It used to be at least affordable in Vegas to eat and now even that sucks. between getting married , work and pool tournaments we have been to Vegas a lot and we agreed waiting for our plain that if we never go back to Vegas we are good with it. I could have spent less money on a cruise and had a much better time.

They remodeled some of the towers. I was in a room that looked exactly the same when I was previously staying in Rio for WSOP back in 2008.

if the 10b is WPA i don't think he can? which makes the above likely to be an exhibition with appearance money.. but it's still one hole and a must watch in my book.
Yea, 10k winner take all. 40k bank invitational as well. Looks like a work around to get our banned players to show even though they are banned from the 10 ball. Was hoping the Predator events in 25 would be true open events. This is going to be disappointing for the BCA Nationals participants.

One of the reasons Filler has become such a fantastic player has been his willingness to match up, over the years, in fringe games he nearly never plays, with the best.

At Derby City, he has gambled (unsuccessfully) with Evan Lunda and Shannon Murphy (broke even) at banks. He even tried Corey Deuel at bar table 8ball (unsuccessfully) knowing in full that Corey was a stone-cold killer on the seven-footer. Another year at the Derby, when nobody accepted JL Chang's invitation to play a high stakes 10ball action match (both SVB and Orcullo declined time and again), Filler stepped up to the plate and beat him in a race to seventeen.

Filler has chosen to match up with two-time Derby City 1pocket champion SVB, and, of course, he will have his hands full as he's quite inexperienced at 1pocket. For Josh, however, he has used matches like this one to learn things and to get more experience in a fringe game.

In 2024, his boldness over the years paid off, as Josh won the Derby City Master of the Table. Good luck to both SVB and Josh. May the best man win.

4 years ago Joshua played T-Rex a long 1p match getting 9-8 and in the end ran over Tony 21-17 after leading 19-13 (it was 11-10 after day1). I think that match proved already that Joshua is capable of beating almost anyone in 1p even without a handicap. I wonder how they would match up even nowadays?

The tournament poster is a give away if the banned players can attend. The "main event" Open is sanctioned by WPA and you can see the logo in the poster.

on a table josh had played on daily for weeks... anyway. josh could probably repeat the win on a neutral table today, because he has improved even more and tony is on the downslide

Agreed. I would add that on the mental toughness side Joshua pretty much has the nuts over pretty much all the players in the world. But the 1p match is still race to 5 and I would bet that especially if Joshua wins there might be longer rematch for a larger pile of dough. This makes the challenge match even more interesting...

SJM,

If I remember this correctly, this is the match where Filler decided he hated his carbon fiber shaft, and decided just before the match to switch back over to his wood shaft, but the shaft was actually slightly warped when he took it out of his case.. Some random dude said "gimmee your shaft, I'll be back in 10 minutes.." Dude take's Filler's shaft to the bathroom and brings it back 5 minutes later, ramrod straight..

Also.. Didn't Chang have a problem with his tip, and they went and woke up some tech with a lathe, and get him to retip Chang's cue at like 0200 in the morning? I think I watched the majority of this match live in the BigTruck room that year.

Yes, that's the one, Russ. To my recollection, it began at about 1:00 AM after a long delay caused chiefly by Chang's equipment problem. I watched about two thirds of the match and went to sleep at about 4:00 AM. The next morning, I discussed the match with Jeremy Jones, who had been the commentator, and he called it some of the finest pool he had ever seen played. An interesting sidenote is that Chang had beaten Filler in the Bigfoot 10ball final earlier in the week.
