Lasik instead of Glasses?

Has anyone transitioned from glasses as a result of Lasik surgery? Did your change in eyesight enhance your play?
I wear glasses and I find that I always look over the top when I play. I fight my glasses as much as I fight my position play. Any suggestions?

I did know a guy who used to wear these massive glassed upside down. The funny thing was it worked, he could play. He also like to play with a 14mm ivory ferrule with 2 moori stacked on top of each other.
His cuemaker make of choice Ed Prewitt.
 
Before you go getting shot in the eyes with a laser..... try contacts. They work really well.

I tried the contacts but had problems due to my astigmatism.
I have an appointment to try contacts one more time. Maybe I should try the upside down glasses thing?
 
Efren Reyes seems to be playing very well after his laser eye treatment last year, and I know of three UK players who are totally amazed by the improvement and are recommending it to everyone.

A close friend said it hurt like heck afterwards, but that it was very worthwhile. Hope this helps.
 
the glasses will hinder your game.. I have an astigmatism and have been to two different doctors to get the proper contacts. Its just trial and error. I must say this though, I feel more confidant at the table with contacts that with my glasses. Lasik is still in its risky stages and lense implants is 9k so if youve got the cash get implants. I dunno as I said its trial and error..
 
I had the Lasik done to just my left eye about 2 years ago. I only had the one eye done so I can also read without glasses. It without a doubt improved my game and my life. It is not really that risky. I would reccomend it to anyone who is a proper candidate. It only hurt for a very short while when i first woke up after my initial nap. I was playing pool later that night without glasses for the first time in 40 years.

Can you see your alarm clock???

I had Lasik done about 7 years ago. Best thing I ever did!! I had both eyes done and yes I do need reading glasses but the feeling of being able to see an alam clock at 3am and the other benifits far exceed the small disadvantage of reading glasses

I too had mine done a couple of years ago as well. It is a joy to be able to see things at a distance and to be able to see much clearer at night when compared to wearing glasses.
I do suffer the same issue of needing reading glasses for these old eyes but I have reading glasses everywhere through out the house and in my pool case. I would have to say that anything within 2 feet of my eyes is hard to see clearly but it has never effected my ability to see the table. As a matter of fact, the darker solid balls are much clearer and I found myself to be more consistent.

The procedures have improved and now with the fact that the doctor does not use a knife to cut the flap it is by far much safer.
If you decide to go after the procedure, take the time to get out and meet the doctor and figure out who will do your follow up visits.
The follow up is as important as the doctor who performs the procedure.

I had lasik about 6 years ago and it was by far the BEST thing I ever did. Wore glasses / contacts for 20+years and just being able to wake up, open my eyes and see the clock was amazing.

As for my pool game, it took a little downturn at first, but once my mind and eyes adjusted to the depth perception issue, it has improved greatly.

just research your doctor, make sure his equipment is up to date and approved for lasik and have fun at your new life.

Where do you play in Longmont?...Do I know you? I live in Boulder.

In regards to Lasik, I had it done over 10 years ago and it was with out a doubt the best thing that I ever did. I wore Coke bottle glasses and was "legally blind". LOL

At any rate, I now see great. I always played OK with glasses, but the table always had a curved affect. I think you can probably adjust to about anything, but not having to wear glasses or contacts made everthing in life much easier. With today's technology it is relatively risk free. I would do it again in a heart beat.

I have bad distance vision and astigmatism also, and wear contacts. I use dailys, as opposed to others, it helps being able to have fresh clean lens's everyday. They do make contacts to help correct the astigmatism, hopefully you will find some that will work for you.
I am just not willing to take a chance on my eyes with surgery unless it was medically neccessary.

I believe that the contact lenses that correct for astigmatism are called "toric" lenses. I wear contacts, one eye is regular and the other has an astigmatism and uses the toric lens. You can also ask the doctor fitting the lenses for a "mid-range" prescription especially for pool, he should get it.
 
I had LASIK surgery done about 3 weeks ago after wearing glasses for 20+ years and NEVER playing pool without them and all I have to say is that the surgery was BY FAR the best money I have ever spent in my life. I just wish I would have done it years ago so I could enjoy it longer.

The one thing that I will mention is that it took a while to become accustomed to the changes because a lot of my pre-shot routines involved pushing up my glasses or adjusting my head position to ensure I was looking through the correct spot but after playing for about 2 weeks now I am playing as good or better than I've ever played and really enjoying the change.

Lasik Ya-hoo!

I got Lasik a little over a year ago. I am at least a ball better, I wore glasses and ChristyD told me that I would improve at least a ball and I did.

I went from 400/20 uncorrected to 20/13 in both eyes.

I am like a freaking eagle now.

For those who have had this done? How much does it cost? and how much does typical insurance cover? Are there any eye problems that prevent this type of surgery?

I have been thinking about getting this done for the past year or so, I am so sick of wearing glasses.

Mine was $3600

I paid $3600. I think it is alot cheaper in other places. I heard in Vegas, it was alot cheaper.

My insurance paid $0.

But some suggestions, that I found out to late.

1. Find out if you can put money at work or other i guess tax free. That would save several hundred dollars. This is a medical expense but alot of programs with employers let you put the money in tax free.

2. I got one year free financing. Okay not a great deal, but I think I paid $1K down and then made small payments then paid off the rest with my tax check. It made it pretty painless.

3. Shop around. I really dont think it is the skill of the doctor (he is like the operator of a machine). I would get the most advanced equiped doctor.
Prices vary greatly and deals can be had.

4. As Nike says...."Just do it"

Thanks Ken, that's amazing insurance paid $0 for it.

I think a call to my insurance provider is in order tomorrow, if I can get over my cowardly attitude towards doctors. Yes I'm a chicken.
