Lassiter Gravestone Project - suggestions welcome

Definitely an image engraved of him. The below on black granite would be really nice. With accomplishments in the uncovered area. And or the headshot photo of him with the glasses on sidelining a tourney is really good as well, can't seem to find that one right now.

Not sure if the above is Joss's pic or they just have their name on it, but may want to ask if it became an option.

That's a good shot. There is also the one the BCA uses.

I know what you mean. He was just a man who played good pool. There are countless headstones from hard-working family men who died defending our country that could probably be better memorialized. .

Well, since they have VFW, and many other military personnel charities and such, then they have their work cut out for them. This here is a pool forum.

I'd feel like an idiot if I went on a website for military folks that were raising money for one of their "own", only to remind them there were more important folks, like orphan kids that died early that need a head stone too?

Many people say that Straight Pool was his best game. In that regard I suggest a rack of fourteen balls with one to the side, and the appropriate epitaph.

I kinda like that idea. Let's see what else is out there....

Keep it peaceful my brothers.

Yes that one is good as well. I find it makes it more personal to see an image of the person, especially for those having no clue who he was, what he looked like etc (pool nuts would not be the only ones passing by ya know)...

I thought 9 Ball was Luther's favorite and best game.

Other than the BCA photo, these are the ones I have, if it helps.

You didn't quote the rest of my post where I support the idea. The point I was trying to make was pool players were Wimpy's family and a small gesture of remembrance is in order.

And another one. One of the better I think, as he breaks his way through straight pool:

I like the picture on black granite however i do think someonr should voluteer to hold a tournament once a year in Raleigh or a town reasonably close to Elizabeth City to honor him.

Saw this on Wiki, and thought it was cool.

Luther Lassiter spent his final days practically broke, living alone in the house of his childhood in Elizabeth City, on a pension provided by oil tycoon Walter Davis, who was a lifelong friend of Lassiter's. When they were children during the Great Depression, Lassiter would give Davis, who came from a poor farming family, a couple of dollars whenever he needed it, which often meant the difference between eating and not eating. Davis never forgot Lassiter's kindness, and repaid him by taking care of his necessities in his last years. To escape his loneliness, Lassiter would often ride his bicycle a couple of blocks away to his younger brother Clarence's and his wife, Barbara's, house, and hang out and play with their two sons.[9]

On October 25, 1988, days before what would have been his 70th birthday,[1] Lassiter died of natural causes in his hometown of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He was found by his nephew next to his pool table where he had apparently been practicing.[3] Lassiter was interred in New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.[12] and was survived by two brothers and three sisters.[3]

Clarence's wife, Barbara, said after his death, "I knew two or three people in my life who I thought would go to heaven - with no doubt - and [Wimpy] was one of them. He treated everybody like they was supposed to be treated

Pretty good epitaph right there!

Indeed it is, many call him the greatest 9 ball player ever, hell of a straight pool player, that's nice to be remembered that way. But her statement says so much more. A few have posted negative comments of how he ended up in the end, alone & broke, while that's true her statement of how he treated people trumps everything. He may have been a great player, he may have died broke but to treat people how they they should be treated made him a success as a human being, something we should all aspire to.

Absolutely

Well said, absolutely.

Ive come to realize that the man that dies with the most friends, wins.

Nice Idea

Thats a real nice idea. Is there a room in Elizabeth City?

Exactly, because he was a poor money manager does not take away from his life. Heck, my sister is probably as bad or worse in money management. So what. You can't master everything in life. I'm betting nobody remembers my sister that way when she's gone, just all the other stuff.

It has been proposed that Luther's grave marker should be " upgraded" in honor of his excellence and accomplishments in the pool world.

The funding for this has been secured thru various generous souls and the production, delivery and installation of a new stone has also been guaranteed.

Permission from the cemetery has been granted.

We have two steps left to finalize.
Permission from the family, and the actual design/layout of the stone.

I will look into the permission issue with the family.

What we'd like from you are some suggestions for designs and even an epitaph to go along with the design. So if you are good with words, handy with design software, or have a great idea, or even a basic sketch, feel free to post it here. All suggestions are welcome.

By the way, there are no restrictions on the style, shape or design, only the size will be restricted to the size of the actual plot.

This is not a contest, just a chance to show some support and respect for a gentleman who has earned the honor and deserves to be remembered for generations to come.
For all those interested. I will be in charge of talking to the family and helping out with this project. It is all gonna be taking care of once the headstone material and inscriptions are all designed. The stone will have to be Gray so all the lettering will be blasted in to the headstone. To do a picture on a stone it would have to be lasered and on a dark stone or black granite in which would not match his parents stone or the other Lassiter family members buried at the Cemetery. We should have an answer soon to the azb member making the stone and another member who is financing it personally. Thanks to the few guys that stepped up so fast to volunteer their time and finances to do such a nice thing for such a great guy and incredible World Champion player.
