Late 80's Cue Identification??

Well, I just heard back from Mike and it's not a Jensen either.



It does have an unusual butt. I thought it might have been "repaired" or something and that's what might have caused it. Richard Black said that all the signs point to him, just not sure about the points. He said that his points weren't that long in the mid-80's. When he comes through my area, he is going to inspect it personally. I think it's one of his, but we'll see for sure.

Any other ideas?

HE'S 100% RIGHT ABOUT THAT. THE POINT LENGTH AND SPACEING AREN'T WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED. THE VENEER THICKNESS IS ALSO OFF.

THERE ARE A LOT OF GUYS THAT IT COULD BE......

MY GUESS IS, THAT IT'S A SMALL LOCAL CUEMAKER SOMEWHERE, AND WHOEVER PUT THE TS LOGO ON IT KNEW THAT IT WASN'T WORTH MUCH, AND KNIFED THE LOGO IN KNOWING THAT IT WAS THE ONLY WAY HE COULD GET GOOD MONEY FOR TEH CUE.

It may be a waste of time but if your going to eventually have it refinished you could remove the wrap and look under it. If it was refinished before they may have turned or sanded the handle for the leather so there would be nothing there,or there may not have ever been anything there but you never know. Just a thought.
 
Well, supposedly there was nothing under the wrap. I was planning on replacing the wrap just because it has been refinished and they wrap was taped over to keep from replacing it. It now has some tape residue and doesn't quite matchup like it did before.

Probably not a Rauenzahn or a Frey. If it is a Frey it has been altered. The shafts look wrong for it to be Jerry's work.

Do you have contact info for Ron Haley, John Bender, and Mike Wheeler?
 
Think Wheeler is still in Bill Schick's shop...last I heard anyway. Their contact info can be found here ( http://www.cuemakers.org/roster.php ).

Another (semi out there) possibility that I just thought of is Doug Bourque. Not a lot of people know, but he made traditional styled cues early on, but he's long since retired. Think his contact info is in the first BB of Pool Cues.

You should just sell it to me for 100 bucks...:grin:...Just kidding I hope you find out who made it, it looks like a very nice cue.
 
Well, I would probably let it go fairly cheap....but not quite that cheap! It's made well, very nice hit....and I don't like steel jointed cues! If you click on the cues in my signature, you will see that I have only two steel jointed cues. One is my wife's cue, the other is this one. I am not a steel joint guy, but I actually really like this cue.
 
To be honest..no matter how good a deal I could get I'm definetly not in the market...I joined this site last summer and only had my 2 Schons for years. Now Ive got 3 Schons, 2 Sherms(1?), a McD, 3-2x4 cases a custom due in 2-3 months another maker needing more details, a half dozen cheaper production cues,almost a dozen 1 piece cues and just won the Black raffle..The next thing I get will probably be divorce papers..:grin:
 
Well, I will be meeting with Richard Black towards the end of this next week. Maybe that will answer the mystery. Then again....maybe not!
 
Well....I met Richard Black today. He and his wife are both extremely nice and I really enjoyed talking with them!

Unfortunately the cue is not one of his. However, he does say that it is very well made. He says the points, the pin/joint/insert construction, and the shafts/shaft taper, feel and balance all point to a high-quality maker. The only problem is that even though they all are good indicators of a higher quality cue, he cannot pinpoint who might have made it. He says that if it is not one of the well-known cuemakers at the time, then it is certainly one of the apprentices that were working with them! Because of the use of thin veneers, he believes this cue to be made in the early to mid 90's.

IT SUCKS THAT IT'S STILL AN UNKNOWN CUE, BUT I'M GLAD THAT I CAN STILL IDENTIFY RICHARDS CUES. YOU ARE RIGHT, HIM AND HIS WIFE ARE VERY NICE PEOPLE TO TALK TO. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR QUEST TO ID THE MAKER. I'LL MAKE AN OFFER TO YOU.... IF YOU WANT YOU CAN SEND THE CUE TO ME TO LOOK AT IN PERSON, AND I HAVE OTHER GUYS IN THE AREA THAT WOULD ALSO LOOK AT IT, AND MAYBE IN HAND WE'LL HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT IT IS. JUST THOUGHT I'D OFFER.

I'll keep that in mind and I might just send it your way. I'm still waiting to hear back from a few other cuemakers, so hopefully someone will recognize it.

The stained forearm makes me think it was made probably in the late 80's. The cue had a linen wrap on it originally, but was changed to leather before I got it. It is a well made cue. It has had at least one refinish and maybe more. I do have emails out to a couple cuemakers, but have not heard from one of them and I emailed a month and a half ago.

It looks like 3 veneers, but under light you can see that the black looks like two thin veneers next to each other.

Richard Black said it looked like one of his, but now he thinks that it would have been built in the mid-80's and he said he was not doing points this long during that time, but other than that everything fits his specs. My other thought was Jensen, but I don't have too much to base that on.


I kinda think the cue looks like one I have seen made by John Guffy. While John mainly used a 3/8-10 pin there is a local gentleman who plays with a Guffy that was Custom made with a Stainless Steel Joint and 5/16-14 pin. If I run into the guy I will get some photo's of the cue, but I have no idea how to get ahold of John I no though that he has not amade cues for many years and he will not even do repairs anymore.
