Late 80's Cue Identification??

Alright, I need some help on who might have made this cue.

The stained forearm makes me think it was made probably in the late 80's. The cue had a linen wrap on it originally, but was changed to leather before I got it. It is a well made cue. It has had at least one refinish and maybe more. I do have emails out to a couple cuemakers, but have not heard from one of them and I emailed a month and a half ago.

It looks like 3 veneers, but under light you can see that the black looks like two thin veneers next to each other.

Richard Black said it looked like one of his, but now he thinks that it would have been built in the mid-80's and he said he was not doing points this long during that time, but other than that everything fits his specs. My other thought was Jensen, but I don't have too much to base that on.

Jensen would be one of my guesses too. Also possibly an early Mike Wheeler cue, maybe made in Black's shop (their dimensions were slightly different that Blacks).

Would be nice if the pics showed better focus and the proportions of the joint sleeve, collars, inserts, and also butt sleeve & bumpre areas. They are not a lot of help as-is. Then someone may recognize this one...

Hmmm.. Good guess on Richard Black. It looks a lot like my old '79 as far as the points are concerned.

Mine is more 'conventional' behind the wrap with windows and a white plastic butt cap and rubber bumper.

Mine has a 5/16-18 joint too and yours looks like a 5/16-14 in the pictures.

Maybe early 80's? (like 80-83 time frame?)

Mine is not signed either; he didn't sign them all, and had a couple ways of signing them as well. (with and without the date)

Good luck! I'm curious as well once you find out for sure...

I will go take some more pictures....give me about 10 mins to get them taken, uploaded, and added.

Ok....extra pictures added to the first post.

Nice cue John! I dont know who made it, but thats right up my alley.
I love those old classic style Hoppe's.
Keep us updated please.

If it was a Black from the late 80's it would surely be signed. But if it was refinished and rewrapped by someone else then the sig could have vanished. I would just email Richard the pics and ask him.

I have....I put what Richard said in my original post. He will be coming through my area in a couple weeks and I will be meeting up with him to see it in person. Also, I was thinking late 80's, but Richard thinks it's mid-80's, and another poster said something about maybe early 80's. So, who knows.

I KNOW WHAT RICHARD SAID, BUT I REALLY THINK IT'S A PHILLIPPI.

I'VE OWNED A LOT ORICHARDS CUES, AND SEVERAL WERE HOPPES STYLE AND THIS DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT TO ME. NEITHER DO THE POINTS. IT JUST DOESN'T LOOK LIKR RICHARDS WORK.

I would bet that the answer is already in this thread. Have you heard anything back yet from Black or Phillippi?

I haven't heard back from Phillippi. Richard Black is coming through my area around the 21st, so we are going to try and meet up then so he can take a look at it. We thought that was better than paying for shipping both ways.

Does someone have Jensen's contact info?

Did you have the cue refinished? It's the same one that had TS "knifed' into he Hoppe ring in an earlier thread.

Somehow I didn't see your post. Yes, it is the same cue and it has not been fixed and refinished yet. Once I find out whose it is, then I will have that person replace the hoppe ring, put the correct logo/signature on the cue, and then refinish it again so that it can no longer be mistaken.

The picture looks like the logo is gone, but I took it out in photoshop. If I don't find out who made it, I will have it fixed here locally by Steve Klein or something and just have no logo.

I just heard back from Phillipi and it's not one of his.

THE BOTTOM OF THAT CUE IS UNIQUE. I'M SURPRISED IT HASN'T BEEN IDENTIFIED HERE.

IF RICHARD THINKS IT'S ONE OF HIS USING THE PICS, THAN I'D HAVE TO AGREE WITH HIM AT THIS POINT, EVEN THOUGH I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE WHERE THE BUTT WAS LIKE THAT.

HOPE YOU FIND OUT......

Marcus
