Lathe question

Longer is better , but their are some other things also to consider. Age of lathe , bed condition , chuck quality , is it a quick change gear box, tool post. There are other but these came to mind.

If you want to taper with it then 13x40 is best. If not then it does not matter.

Try here to start. I did ALOT of my own searching. Then again, this thread was merely on the second page.

Although I 'm not a real fan of machinery dealers, have you ever been to one or asked questions of one?

If I were to do it all over, I would set up a time to meet with a dealer who REPAIRS machines and give him 100 for an hour or so of his time.

Have you looked at cuemakers websites? Some have shop tours. These things will give you an idea.

What SB did you get?, and congrats:thumbup:Does that mean your Bassell is for sale?

I bought an old 13x36 from a fellow az'er. I dont know what model, but i have a cue sitting in it at home that should be close to done tonight when i get home . Im keeping my bassel lathe for tips, sanding and finishing work. I just bought another lathe that im going to make a dedicated tapering machine out of. Its an addiction, and there aint no damn cure! Lol!.

Sounds awesome, and i hear there's worse addictions to have, but i think the jury's still out on that one. I may be picking up a 59XX series Clausing this weekend for my first lathe.

I have a bad habit of taking things too literally, but if you are REALLY going to be "picking up a 59XX . . " you are one seriously strong dude - SIR!

LOL

I tried to look up the weights on the 5900 series, but didn't get very far. I guess you know that you want one with 36" between centers or longer.

ENJOY!!

Is 12x36 long enough to taper shafts?? Thanks

If it is, it would just be barely long enough i think. My 13x36 is just long enough, but its still too close for me, so thats why i bought the other lathe. Get a 13x40 if you can.

I think the taper attachment on most lathes is considerably shorter than the distance between centers.. you could offset the tail stock for a taper a little shorter say maybe 34 inches but it would be a straight taper not a compound taper like a "pro taper" cue shaft. I did build a taper attachment for my Clausing 6013 with cam follower bearings that follows a 3/16" X 2" X 48 inch flat bar and puts the compound taper of a "pro taper" cue shaft on the flat bar it does a good job but is a pretty big project... it fastens to the ways on each end... the cam follower will follow whatever taper you grind or mill on the bar... of course you have to be able move the router in and out in relation to the shaft, it takes some dedication to do all this :-)
