league panic button!

Wednesday night league got me thinking. Haven't lost that badly in over 20 years. Seemed like we were so far down, I had to do something special to turn it around. We witnessed every roll go their way. Heck I never even saw a ball until the third or fourth game. When I did...I blew it. Made a good cut but no shape. Two games later, tried a four railer, missed it and sold out. Thinking back as we do, I realized I kinda hit the panic button. Desperation mode. I'm better than that... but felt it was necessary in the moment. Had I made those balls and then run out...Hero. Walked out a loser. Ouch. Has this happened to you...? Moral of this rant...go with what got you there. Pulling out some crazy shit just made it worse. Go figure.

I am sick to the back teeth of league play personally so no bad performance on my part or good roll on theirs surprises me any more.

Could Be a Lot Worse

In circle track racing we called it a hero move. If the low percentage move went just right we were going to be heroes, if the slightest thing went wrong we were going to destroy a lot of expensive parts, maybe the car. Some chance of getting pretty dinged ourselves. Common sense not to make the hero moves, a lot of thirds or fourths paid better than one first, but I wasn't out there for "also ran" status!

In pool all we can do is weigh all of the information we have, not only what we see as our long term odds but what is happening in the moment. Sometimes the safe play is the right one, hang in there to shoot again. Sometimes it really is time to either make something happen or give up for the night.

Assuming they are successful, what is the path forward from one shot going to gain you? The other one? When you put the shot in the context of the game and particularly the whole night sometimes creating some positive karma is worth the risk. Sometimes things aren't really that bad and you need to just take the safe shot and get in grind mode. Only you know for sure.

I hear you. It's still bugging me two days later....just keep playing it over and over in my head. Makes me sick too.

In general:

League is what's keeping pool healthy but, as JC said "league" SUCKS and nothing is suprising about league play......NOTHING!!!!

Played league twice a week for 4 years. In house league, not APA, TAP, etc. It was mano y mano, not team. Loved it and looked forward to it.

I played one season of team. Never again.

I’ve never played league before but in any case where things aren’t going your way sometimes it’s better to go down swinging.

How was the mano y mano setup? Were you the only member of your team or did you just play others 1 on 1? The city league I played on for years was team, now I play BCA and APA and although it's a team environment, the games are 1 on 1.
