Least favorite thing about the Derby?

Yeah, there’s 5places set up for food , two were open pretty much all the time. The pizza place I’ve never seen open in three years and the cantina wasn’t open this time.
These places are all right outside the tournament room.

Are people just allergic to making money?

My least favorite thing about the Derby is HANDS DOWN the announcer for the banks ring game. Is he necessary? I love the relaxed nature of the event, the interactions between the players, the crowd noise, etc. But that guy needs to STFU. He has a comment for literally EVERYTHING and it's almost never funny.

What's your least favorite thing?
The smoke.

Lack of seating to watch matches. People take a seat and keep them for their buddies for the entire day in some sections. If you leave your seat, it should be up for grabs. That's more of a personal consideration problem than a tourney issue.

The buybacks - the tourneys will always run behind schedule because of them.

The amateurs (not their fault). They should have a play-in tourney for them with the top finishers getting to play against the professionals/high Fargo rated players. The best players are penalized by having to waste so much time against lesser opponents that have no chance of beating them.

The antiquated use of technology. People onsite and at the venue should be able to keep track of current games, schedules, etc. This is 2024, not 1999.

The food.

None afaik.
From what I know, the casino does contribute. I have no clue what it is.

My least favorite thing about Derby is looking up the scores online. The completed matches weren't there and such. That and always being behind in the schedule and finishing late.

How they treat the elderly and veterans and disabled!

Did away with golf carts and scooters

Refused to maintain a block of rooms at the venue for special needs.

Refused to allow early booking for veterans and disabled.

The place sells out and veterans and disabled. Frozen out since alternative lodging is so far away

Lol

You really think Louisville is an option?

Especially, with bad hips and knees !

Especially, with intestinal issues!

It's bad for many

Navigating the distance from car to the venue is something I hear many people grumble about and complain. Rightfully so, I try to bring my pops to the event and it is impossible for him. If not at the casino he can't go back to the room and rest. Even then, it is 50/50 he can tolerate it....

As a somewhat new convert to watching pool, I didnt like much about it. Hard to find realtime scores, subpar video production, too many events, too many mediocre players. I lost interest after a couple of days.

I find Ed's (the announcer) routine during the Banks Ring game tiring as well. He basically just rags on the participants imploring them to bring more excitement when they are consistently drilling difficult bank shots over and over. This is one of my favorite events to watch on TV of Derby though the energy in the room was odd probably due to the announcing though was surprised how quiet the crowd was given the the high quality shots made. Guys were drilling four railers repeatedly and barely a smattering of applause meanwhile I'm on my couch going nuts with "can you believe that shot!", "Wow!", etc.

This is incredibly naive. As far as benefits to participants/attendees -- reduced room rates, sufficient amenities, swag, free coffee and cokes -- what is Horseshoe coming across with? (Anyone ever attended a regular convention? If not, ask someone who has.) Something has to be flowing somewhere, so where is it going? Let me go think about this for a while, and I'll get back to y'all . . .

A good place to begin our analysis is to determine what Horseshoe is making off this deal -- a captive group of 500+ during one of the deadest spots on the calendar for a whole week is a mighty good card to hold at this negotiating table, but we can't even seem to come out of it with a @$^%ing taco truck in the parking lot.

Wait a second, where did that damn Judas Goat run off to? It was just right here in front of us.

Perhaps as the crow flies.

By the time you get out of the casino, parking lot, drive the river road, get on the highway, make it through the Louisville mixing bowl that seems to have been under construction for the last 10 years, and find parking at a restaurant, it’s more like an hour.

Having planned some large conventions and conferences, the usual way is to put out an RFP to venues that could accommodate your event, receive back written proposals and then do site visits where the hotels try to bribe you to pick them with excellent hotel rooms for organizers, food samples, etc. During dead times, you can get surprisingly good deals.

If Diamond is going into negotiations with the idea the event must be at the Horseshoe for historical reasons, they are drawing dead, and their patrons are paying the price. Maybe it is time to open the geographic window a fraction and make the Horseshoe compete a bit.

I can’t remember what year the casino flooded (someone can surely chime in here) but for those that think it’s bad now, throw another 1/2 mile walk in mix back then on top of everything else. Last time I stayed there during the event our room had black mold on the inside of the windows. Not to mention at arrival time they conveniently didn’t have our room but graciously gave us a smoking room 😒😂 the bbq place that’s gone was open a couple hours a week and Paula Deans buffet was priced like the Rio in Vegas. I’ve been to that casino throughout the year and those 10 days for the DCC is 110% their bread and butter. You’re in the middle of no where with little WiFi and when my phone went dead…they stopped me at the top of the escalator saying I had to pay the daily spectator fee to use the hotels business center because the computer was my only means of communication for a brief stint, and was on the other side of the action room 🤦🏼 they were literally turning people away who had zero to do with the event and needed to use the computer lol

If that place ever crosses Katt Williams…forget about it 🤣🤣🤣

',

I wasn't there in person but a number of friends said there were spots where the smoke was a problem for them.
I appreciate knowing/learning about the smoking permitted policy there. That would dissuade me from ever attending that otherwise appealing event .
However, to each his own. As Sinatra used to say: "You do you . . . and I'll do me."

Excellent points. My interest kept up because I know most of the players and was following their progress. I was OK with a fixed view from 20 feet away on a stream with guys talking about pizza and random local players. Figuring out the schedule was quite a challenge.

I recommend attending at least once, but in the current venue I think you are going to have to remind yourself from time to time, "Just relax. Relax. Relax."

Just to clarify, the smoking was in the casino not in the tournament areas.

True but New Albany has some reasonable places to eat, so about half an hour if the coal train isn't crossing the river road. ;)

I stayed on the Kentucky side one year and that opened up a bunch of eating places for me. You gotta have a car, though.
