Leather vs. linen

What are the pros and cons, is it just for cosmetic or does a leather wrap play/feel any better. I have a nice cue with a linen wrap, am thinking about getting a real lizzard wrap, anyone ever go from linen to leather and have regrets, thanks for any information I get.

My main concern when swaping wraps is the wrap groove depth. Some exotics and cheap leathers are thicker than linnen and the groove needs to be made deeper. If you want to return to linnen later the groove needs to be built back up to it's original depth. Other than thicker wraps it is no big deal to swap back if you don't like the leather. I prefer stack leather to wrapped but that is just personal preference. Chris.

true. some leather is thicker but a cuemaker can make it flush a few different ways

1 cut wrap goove deeper like chris said. if its a low end cue id say its ok.

2 block sand the leather on each end to feather it in. i would do this on higher end cues so your not cutting into it. takes longer but works well.

lee... brianna187 has a immitation black lizard only he offers. it is the nuts. looks real stays shinny and holds up. also its kinds thin so there is no need to cut wrap the groove. i just feather it in with a razorblade if needed. ill see if i can dig up a good pic of it

real lazard breaks down from play over 2 yrs or so.

I'll never go back to linen.. it just feels awful in my hands now that I've had leather. I use the leather protector from Wilson's (that comes with new coats) about every 4 months or so, and the leather stays perfectly clean as a result. I expected the humid summers here to make it rough, as my hands tend to get moist.. but I carry a microfiber towel on my case and actually haven't had to use it on the wrap yet.. it's just a wonderful thing!

i am also spoiled with leather. i have original cortland white with green on my cue now but that stuff is like gold.very very smooth. i wont use linen either feels like crap

Thanks for all the help, you convinced me to try leather, not sure which kind, but I am sure I will like it when I get it back.

try the skins, real lizard feels much better than leather lizard.no reason for it to break down in 2 years either.

Hey Michigander,

If you can afford it, REAL elephant ear is, IMO, the ultimate in leather wraps. It has a hand that has an unbelieveable feel. Mostly smooth but at the same time a hint of texture. I was unknowing about this until recently until I received a cue from Paul Drexler with real elephant ear wrap on it. Once I put my hand on it, it went to the very top of my list for feel and beauty. I've only seen it in dark gray, burgundy, and black. For a non-exotic leather wrap I like "Tiger pigskin.." Its common but has a nice feel and holds up real well. I absolutely hate lizard or snake for my own playing cues. YMMV.

I have a calfskin wrap on my Samsara and it's ohh so nice.. That elephant ear sounds great too, and gives me a reason to buy another cue! lol!

Real lizzard is more then I want to spend, I am sending my cue away next, I am sure the cue maker will do the best he can, and that is all I am asking. Just something that looks great and feels great.

I perfer leather. I have done several wraps and everyone that has switched except one customer has stated they perfer the leather.

i was a huge fan of the real thing. but i found after a year or 2 it got dull and smooth. this happened multiple times and i dont get sweaty hands either. the stuff that lee has is from a shoemaker. i looks real as hell. i put it on a cue 2 years ago and it still looks the same as the day i put it on

when i say break down i didnt mean falls off. i ment dulls and gets smooth and looks bad. on a show cue real is the way but a player i like this stuff

i like the elephant.very nice texture and still soft as Martin said.also very durable.i like that .024,we got ours down to .030 which is fine.anyone need a good deal on an Elephant ear wrap PM me.we have lots of it.
