Hi,
Last month I purchased one of Lee's adjustable leather wrap templates on his Christmas Special. Today I used it for the first time and cut 2 wraps. I was so impressed with the results of the wrap jobs an the accuracy of the jig that I felt I had to comment on this tool.
In the past I have carefully measured with an aluminum ruler and made a measuring mark with a pencil on the ruler and tried to make my transfer of the measurement and close as I could. I am not that bad at transferring a measurement but I realized that when ever I cut a leather I would always try to factor in a slight stretch factor.
With this new template I snapped the jig between the wrap steps & locked it, placed it on the leather and cut it on both sides. Because it is the exact size of the wrap you don't have to slide it down to meet the length mark, which is another chance to blow the transfer of the measurement a hair.
Both wraps were perfect and I did not over think anything concerning the leather size as I trusted the tool. I also noticed that the radius curves on this template seemed to work better than the other template I was using. I always had a slight overlap angle at the A- Joint cut that had to be trimmed square slightly with a scissors. This was always a pain in my ass and had to try to factor in how much to cut in this area to make it work.
With this new template both edge areas came out perfect. I made my two long razor cuts in the my wrap jig and when I installed the leather the fit ups at the steps were amazing. I had full confidence of repeatability after the first one.
If you are going to buy a leather wrap cutting template, this one is the cats ass.
