leather wrap vs. irish linen

i noticed that some folks don't like irish linen as a wrap.. why is it?

The main reasons that I choose leather over irish linen are that the linen is a little slippery for my tastes, gets dirty and/or fades too easily and I just like the feel and look of leather better.

Please, you have leather b/c you think chicks dig them.
You tell them it's Gucci leather. :D
I like leather too b/c linen does become slipstroker's delight after a while.

leather has such a different feel to it, I like it a lot, I now play with a linen wrapped cue, which i like too, but overall leather has its advantages because it lasts longer

thanks.. i discussed it with my dad and he actually agreed.. we sometimes use irish linen and eventhough the cue is beautiful and hits solidly, it really has no effect to the market..thanks a lot.

There is always a third option. A pretty piece of finished wood. Since I have been shooting with a solid handle cue for a couple years, I don.t think I will go back to any kind of wrap. My hand does not slip, and I can hold the cue with a lighter grip. Also there is no change in feel depending on where your hand is placed on the cue. A nice piece of exotic wood looks better than any lienen wrap, in my opinion.

Zeeder and I agree on almost all parts of cue design, but I am just the opposite on this one. Except for Mr. Hercek's smooth leather, I am a linen man. I'm sure others do smooth leather, but Joel's is the only one I've played.

it ultimately boils down to taste.

if you're consciensous about wiping down the wrap, either maintains well, but dirt will show more on a light wrap, although cortland looks great when it has darkened. if yoy sweat a lot, maintenance is especially important on leather because the salt just eats away at the leather and i don't know if it can be restored. when that happens, it can really look bad.

You would be surprised how many cues are now ordered with wood handles. Usually on cues that have some beautiful exotic wood for the forearm and butt - Cocobolo, Tulipwood, Ebony, etc with no points or inlays.

Clean Hand don't get WRAPS Dirty... Towel, or Babby Flannel Rags, or an Old T-Shirt does fine...
Your hand has this thing called sweat and oil.
Chalk gets down there too if you chalk while the stick is upright.
Smoke if you are in a smoking allowed state.

I prefer the wood handle as well. Leather is my 2nd choice. I don't like linen due to the fact its too slippery. With the proper "very loose" grip the linen will slide around causing you to squeeze the butt too tight...killing action & accuracy. With wood/leather you can loosely hold the cue with one or two fingers and the cue will stick right there...giving you superb control. I find when I use a cue with linen..I actually hold it below the linen to achieve my desired results. But many fine players use linen so its indeed personal preference. If I had to use linen...I'd seal & press it multiple times using a friction polish...when done it would look and feel very much like leather. Players often wonder why they play better with a sneaky than their fancier cue...its the linen, or lack there of it.

I like the fact that linen is slippery, can't slip stroke on a tacky serfice like leather
