Leaving chalk upside down on the rail?

Chalk on the rail AT ALL drives me buggy. I like to wear light colored shirts and I'm short. When I'm really focused on my game, I dont' see what's outside of the cloth. That means, when I lean over to play, my clothes (and sometimes me, too) lean on the rail. If the chalk is up, my clothes get chalk marks. If the chalk is down, some has fallen loose and gets on my clothes.

Why can't people have a little respect for other people's clothes and keep the chalk off the table, altogether? I wear my chalk in a pocket or on my arm (thanks to a pocket chalker). That way, it walks with me, around the table and when I need it, I don't have to lose my focus on the game to find it. When I play pool, the room owners dont' have to worry about cleaning the messy chalk off the rail, when I'm done. And, I don't have to worry about who's clothes I messed up by leaving the chalk on the table, either.

I think they should make a rule about keeping it off the table. I mean, think about it... How many of you have ever cared if you mess up anyone else's clothing with the chalk? Most likely, you never even thought about it.

I hate it. I had some people over the other night and one guy ALWAYS left the chalk chalk side down on the rail. It is an irritating habit.

I was banging some balls around with a former US Open champ who will remain nameless and noticed that he kept putting the chalk down on its side. Not as bad as upside down but still enough to make me crazy.

There were two pieces of chalk on the table and as an experiment I would flip them both straight up before I shot/while I chalked. Without fail he would put one or both back on their sides during his inning (which always seemed to last considerably longer than mine).

I never did say anything :D

I figure if you win the Open you can put the chalk down however you like.

Normal people however......

Leaving chalk sideways is actually more annoying! Many times I would pick up the chalk assuming the chalk is either facing up or down, only to find out that my finger is now in the chalk. These kind of people drive me nuts~

Was it Shane? Leave him alone, he's just a big dumb kid:D.

I suppose if you put chalk on it's side then you are less likely to get stained clothes when leaning over the chalk (I get blue squares on my clothes occassionally) :p

Lol..

Why go out of your way---just casually knock it off on to the floor and forget about it. Just use your one piece of chalk. If the player says he cant help setting it down that way ---just say you cant help knocking it off.

That is hilarious!:grin-square:

man you guys are lucky..... i wonder if the tables where i go ever get cleaned.... o well i'll take dirty tables and a piece of chalk turned the wrong way if i still get to know the characters i do and see the big action and great players i get to see on a daily basis.

Watching long-time players leave the chalk upside down on the rail drives me nuts!

Does this bother anybody else? (If I'm alone in this, I'll get counseling)

Dude there are so many more things in the world that you can get your knickers tied in a knot over.

Give your heart a break and lighten up a little.

If it bothers you so much put it in your pocket. I always keep my chalk in my pocket so it's a natural motion to pick up the offending chalk and deposit out of reach.

Add me to the list of those annoyed by upside down, or sideways chalk left on the rail. I've tried a few times to ask my opponent to keep the chalk face up, and explained why, but not one of them would change. Several wanted to argue about my trying to shark them with my request which seems rediculous since I did it when it was my turn at the table.

Anyway, I haven't found a satisfactory way to resolve this, so I just put up with it. Where I play drinks are never a problem, talc/baby powder is rarely used and very few ever smoke over the table, it's just the chalk, so I coult my blessings and try to ignore it.

I used to not understand at all why people would do this (it isn't done accidentally, those who do it ALWAYS do it) but hadn't thought about preventing stains caused by leaning over a chalk. This argument seems weak to me since it was never mentioned by any of the people who I asked to stop, but it could be an explanation I suppose.

I don't care if my opponent leaves the chalk upside down. I made it a habit though to place the chalk facing up though just to keep the table at work clean.

what really gets me pissed is when somebody misses and then starts chalking and they know i need to use the chalk.

I grew up playing in a very old school pool room where the median age was about 60 year old playing Golf & Pay-ball ring games & those old men would tell you to learn proper pool etiquette or get out of the game. Maybe we need some more old men.

Or more old women!

When I teach seminars, we go over pool etiquette and one thing I always stress is putting the chalk right side up.

There is this one player that I swear does it on purpose, no matter how many times I ask her not to do it. I think it became a shark move and she just liked watching me deliberately turn it back right side up!

Chalk holder yuck

It annoyed me but not a lot until I got moved from the field into the office where a more strict (nicer) dress code is enforced. Chalk dosen't mix with dress clothes as easy as it did with jeans, so I started using a chalk holder:eek: . Professional sharkers abound in our area so my only option was to start throwing the chalk in the trash. It nearly got complicated a couple of times; however, it has worked out. If I have to wipe chalk dust, they have to pick out gravel.

I hate it too. Its just disrepctful. we definately need more old timers to correct people.

and to all the people who do it. Please stop doing it. u cant say you dont know now.

Owning a table at home I'm at least sympathetic to the reasons for leaving the chalk facing up and alway do so myself, but when I'm playing I couldn't care less what the other players are doing with the chalk.

steve <--- thinks there's way too many Felix Ungers and not enough Oscar Madisons on here

you know, i have this theory about self improvement and the average person. i really dont think the average person wants to improve anything, and this would be a perfect example. go tell a guy in the pool room that puts his chalk on the rail upside down (like an idiot) to do it the right way and he wont do it!!! its truly amazing, and like is like this too, people just dont improve themselves. they are too busy thinking..... "i know the right way, dont tell me how to do it"

I do the same thing, when I see it in time. Most of the time, I lean over on it, because I'm focused on my game and MY chalk is on my arm, so I never think about chalk being on the table.

And, most of all, you're very right. On the scale of 1-10 of things that are really important in life, it's not one of the top 3, so it's not worth getting upset over, for the most part... until I land on the chalk, again. Then, it's one of the most important things in life for just a minute or so. But, only for a minute or so. :p

Buy a pocket chalker and a piece of chalk. Put the chalk in the pocket chalker, put the pocket chalker in your pants pocket. When you are about to shoot, chalk your cue and put your chalk back in your pocket. Next time you come up to the table, you will know right where your chalk is and not have to lose your concentration on the game just to find it... and you'll always have chalk.
