LED Light vs Diamond Light

I unpacked the LED panels. They are beautiful! Aluminum trim on the outside, and a nice diffuser that has some texture to it. The panel is about 1/2" thick. They were professionally packaged from the factory, 2 LED panels per box. Also included is a power supply (from the current ratings, it is only enough for one of the panels).

It will be a few days before I can get this wired up and see how it works. Any of you DIY guys should snatch these up before they are gone. Forget the LED strip lighting on eBay. This is all done for you. I imagine all of these panels are exactly the same. This one is 80W, 6000K, input 23VDC, 3400mA.

The seller only has 10 of these packages left (2 LED's per package). He can't ship just one LED panel, because the packaging from the factory is explicitly for 2 panels and very well done at that.

This is only my impression after unpacking. I have not powered them up.

That seems like a really good price. Most of them are about $195 for 1 panel that size.

After reading this post I did a little research and found this light.

However, I ask a friend in the lighting business who also plays pool about the light. He said it would be way to bright unless it was mounted on the ceiling. I would be interested in your opinion after you have installed it.
Thanks

Thanks for the preview review!

power them up and take a picture in a dark room?? It doesnt take much to get me excited. I am needing some table lights soon too.

I just hung up the light in a "very temporary" way, using kite string. LOL.

A few comments:

1. Qty 1 2x4 panel is defenitly enough for a 9' table. No problems illuminating the entire table at all.

2. I recorded the lux on the table with the old flourescent Brunswick light fixture, and the LED. I think the max numbers at the center of the table were about the same. The LED did not drop off as rapidly when getting to the ends of the table.

3. The balls look great, no problems seeing them anywhere. (although to be fair, I never had a problem with my old light).

4. The light causes me eye strain. Its the glare from the fixture itself. Its too strong. I held up the grate from my old Brunswick light fixture over the LED with my hand, and it made a world of difference. IMO, this light needs the grate, for my preferences.

5. I have a dimmer I will wire in and see if that is better/worse.

6. I can also put it higher on the ceiling.

7. I've been recording video as I've been going along, with details of the light, and the lux numbers, etc. I will try to put it all together for you in a few days.

8. I think its ugly. Just hanging there. It looks out of place. My old light was a really nice framed actual pool table light. It might be best to put it against the ceiling for aesthetics.

9. My conclusion for now: If you are a handyman, buy this LED panel, get a grate from home depot, and make a frame for the LED and grate assembly. Put some eyescrews in it, and hang it with very narrow chain. You don't need more than qty 1 2x4 panel. If you are happy with your current light fixture, I'm not so sure this is "that" much better (assuming the eye glare gets fixed). I think its definietly very good, and more light and more even than before, but its not a "huge" improvement, imo.

@iusedtoberich - Was your brunswick light 4 x 8ft T8 bulbs?

I'd like to get a 2x4 panel and hang it like this. I'm doing a forum search. I know there was a custom light someone made that I had really liked. I dont want a full 8ft length light setup.
I want something similar to the diamond light, but just ~4.5ft long.

....snip....

No. My Brunswick is a home model light, not the GC light. It is qty 4, 4 ft T8 bulbs.

Your picture is how I have the LED hung now, except using kite string:). I already had 4 eye hooks in the ceiling for my Brusnwick fixture that I tied the kite string to. My light is a bit lower down, maybe 8" lower.

Was your GC light setup to be 4ft in lenght with 4 tubes all next to each other such as IIII
or 2 next to each other extending to 8ft in length.

I ordered the same panels from the eBay seller. Haven't received them yet thought. I offered $150 and it was accepted. Would they have gone lower? Maybe, for the price it was worth the shot. I think I will take the advice of "iusedtoberich" and built a frame and use the grate to diffuse the light a bit. We'll see how it goes.

Gold crown light on a Diamond

This has 4 8ft tubes. Provides fantastic lighting. Notice very little shadow near rails.20140421_180821_Richtone(HDR).jpg

It was 4 tubes all side by side. So the total size of the Brunswick light is 2' x 4'.

Good deal:) I suspect these will come down a lot more as the years go on. This ebay seller is quite a bit less than the other ones. He might have gotten them for free from a job surplus or something like that... who knows.

Please let me know when you get the light if yours came with one transformer or two. Mine came with one.

I spliced together a video for you guys over the last 3 days of messing around with the LED. It compares the fluorescent fixture with the LED. I have a lot of info in it, so its a bit long at 17 minutes.

Enjoy:)

Thanks, Just watch it it.... Yes video and pictures can be very deceiving.

I think I will pull the trigger on a dimmable 2x4 led panel.

However, I think nothing beats the 4x 8ft tubes with diffuser.

Why not combine the casing and diffuser of a diamond style light with a led panel. Best of both worlds. Come to think of it, I'm a be a bit surprised it hasn't been done before.

This, IMO, is the best way to go. Maybe two 2x2', mounted into a Diamond light box.

That being said, all the things people say about the LED light,... I have no issues. It's a great, bright light.

My lighting 2 cents

Hey guys just wanted to chime in with my recent experience in lighting. I have a drop ceiling in my game room. I bought 5000k t8 bulbs for my troffer style drop in grid light. The lighting was great but the glare and the eyestrain was awful. I bought these filters (see link below) and they worked great. They take out the flicker and harmful uv light that causes strain on the eyes. The were quite expense filters but they work I can now play with even light with no eyestrain or glare.
