Left handed vs. right handed

I was curious what you all think of trying to play with your left hand instead of going to a bridge for a lot of shots. Will it make your game better or foul up your normal playing routine by switching hands to much? Should I practice drills just shooting left handed?

Ambidexterity is a very useful skill that can be cultivated. But it takes a lot of practice and humility. Not much different from using a bridge correctly, these respects.

Practice until shooting left handed is completely comfortable and accurate. Do not attempt it under competitive circumstances any earlier.

I like shooting opposite handed. I feel that my mechanics are a lot cleaner. I guess it's because I haven't spent years cultivating bad habits on my left side. The only things my left side lacks when compared to my right side are consistant shot weight and confidence.

I don't practice a lot of drills lefty, but I have taught myself to shoot lefty to some extent. It is invaluable every now and then. Whenever I can shot lefty (i.e. within my range of lefty ability) rather than twist my body all around or get a bridge I do it. You should practice it I suppose, but if you're like me you've enough to practice with your dominant hand to keep you busy.

Definitely learn it. Just throw 15 balls out on the table and try to run as many as you can opposite handed.

It Runs In The Family

I can shoot right handed or left handed, I guess that you might call me amphibious...

I can't let you get away with that, you stole it from Danny Dileberto. ;)

I taught myself

to do that years ago (like when I was 16-17-18). Plus shooting right or left one handed, and using my left foot as a bridge. Want a real game?
Try playing someone with your opposite hand one handed without no rails, good for training you to focus while shooting.... lol I really haven't practiced left handed for a long time, although I have no problem switching when I need to on a shot. I can still shoot 5-6 speed left handed. Only hestitation I wouild have is if it is a long shot that needs extra draw or english.

I don't know if this comes into play, but my Dad switched me when I was 3 from left to a righty mostly for baseball (family sport at the time) because left handed gloves were rare then, and thouight sports would be easier for me as a righty.

I believe you people have just solved the problem with my game lately......... I must have bought a left handed cue (they should mark them better).

I shoot with both hands, but don't run drills. At best, I find that the only time I shoot weak hand is going to be a rail shot, so these are what I practise.

If you got a left-handed cue, just rotate it 180 degrees and it will be right-handed.

Or, perhaps your Dad switched you from right to left handed without telling you. You've been shooting with the wrong hand.

I never thought it was that hard and I actually think it helps 'cause you have to concentrate and really focus on your mechanics when shooting with your unnatural side.

Comes in handy. I hate using the bridge.

I never practice opposite handed....I'm lefty, but I shoot a lot of right handed shots. If I can reach the shot comfortably, I'll shoot it. For me the bridge is the last resort, but I like using the bridge o.k. We used to gamble sets opposite handed when things got "slow" at the pool room, and it gets you shooting well opposite handed quickly, or broke!:D

For what its worth...I golf righty, pool lefty, write lefty, hockey righty, switch batter, so I might have some strange thing going on that makes it easier for me?

i practiced some left handed last night, and im so awful at it and it feels so weird, it just doesnt seem like its worth the effort to sort thru it. Im tall though and i can usually reach all but the most difficult stretch shots.......i just try and pay attention now and not leave myself in that situation.

This may go with out saying but you have to reverse everything when playing opposite handed. If you line up your right foot with the shot while playing normally, you have to line up your left foot while opposite handed. Just keep practicing and you will get it.

Thankfully you won't have to shoot too many tough pots with your left hand. Usually the shots will be shorter ranged.
