Length of hustle

I don't know if this qualifies as a hustle or not.
When I was 17 or so I already played pretty good straight pool(ran 101 when I was 16). The story is that a family man would come in once a week at night and we would play a couple game for $5.00(this was 1964)He played pretty good but had no chance to win if I played all out. I would keep the games close and once in awhile let him win. He really enjoyed playing and I considered him to be a customer. This went on for months. The room only served soda and snacks but I always bought him something.
Funny part of the story is one night he says"Do you have a job? And I replied "Yes,I'm working right now".
So turns out he needed some help in his business and I got a job that paid real good for the times. The minimum pay back then was $1.00 an hour and the job he gave me was commission based and I would get paid cash every day of $25 to $50. And yes it was legal work.

With some customers, 5-10 minutes. And with real customers that could play a little, 5-10 years. Many have gone to their grave thinking they could win.

About a year and a half

When I started playing pool again about four years ago I went to the local gambling pool hall and started off playing with the B and C players. Not that I could have tangled with any of the A players yet but I knew more about the game than the B players. I was having problems with getting back into stroke only playing once a week or so. I knew how to move the cue around the table and would make some great shots to get shape on the next ball only to miss a dead shot. I won most of the time against the B players and kept it at that level for about a year and a half before they figured out I was starting to play a little too good for them.

I basically screwed up one night when an A- player who I did not know asked me to play and I ended up breaking even with him after a couple of hours. A couple of the B players saw the game and after that I was not a part of the B player group anymore.

Long Term Investor

I played a guy once who was new in town for some cheap sets in a game that was way out of line for him. He was arrogant, loud, and cocky and offered me the 7. I took it, lost a few sets on purpose, and quit after about an hour. A buddy of mine was watching and pulled me off to the side afterwards and asked me, "What the hell are you doing? He's going to talk to people and find out about you and you're never going to get your money back. You realize that, right?" I told him I had a feeling he was wrong. The next time I saw the guy I got the 7 out and won. Over the next few months the guy and I played every time we saw one another and I never let him beat me again. Each time the bet got a little bigger and he gave less weight to the point where I was playing to my potential, giving him the 7, and betting decent money. I guess that's not really a hustle though...maybe just a stupid move on my part but he kept coming back for whatever reason.

Yep, youre a long term investor.

Just another lovely day in paradise....

Whats the longest you ever played out a hustle. Weeks? Months? Longer?

When I was in Jr. Highschool I played this guy at the poolhall every Friday evening when he got off work for over a year.

I won anywhere from 1/2 his check to all of it, it was so regular that I could even borrow money from the poolhall owner mid-week on the money I was going to win that Friday from the guy if I needed it!

Hell you guys are all amateurs... My cuemaker has had me on the hook for at least 6 years... Never ever pay up front especially if you are indecisive LOL

years in some cases, months on more than i can count. Sadly thats a 2 way street sometimes.
