Lessons???

Would it be worthwhile for me to take lessons?

Here is why I ask such a silly question.
I have been playing pool for about 36 years (old dog, new tricks).
I --
Am primaraly a bar room player.
Do not own a table to practice on.
Play 1 or 2 nights a week.
Get to the pool hall about once a week.
Do not play in any league.

I am afraid that any lesson I take will be a waste of time and money without being able to take the time needed practicing for any changes to take effect. After 36 years I realize that any bad habits that I have are probably going to be hard to change and very easy to slip back into.

I would like to hear from any instructors out there but also from any players who are in the same situation as me and have taken lessons.

Thanks for the input,
Andy

I believe this...
We are either the sum result of the limitations we place upon ourselves, or we are the sum result of following through on our unlimited potential. It's all about your attitude towards learning. If the attitude is questionable, the results will be too. If you go into it with a positive attitude, you will get positive results and you won't look at lessons as a waste of your time and money.

BlackJack,

I am always open to learning something new and do have a love for this game. However the limited time I have to practice and reinforce anything I would learn makes me wonder how much I would really benefit from lessons.

Thanks,
Andy

Playing 1 or 2 nights a week isn't too bad, try to get a short lesson if it's available. What have you got to lose?

I've had lots of students in your situation. Old bad habits that are ingrained are very hard to remove permanently. Rather than work on those for six months, it's a lot more fun to continue to play in your usual situation.

However....

Maybe there are simple things that you are doing wrong that could be fixed right away. Maybe there are some fun drills that aren't a burden to try once a week that could give immediate help. Maybe a slightly more organized approach to understanding your own problems could help you to fix them yourself so you don't keep making the same mistake on the same shot over and over. Maybe there are some neat insights and techniques that you can use easily that you simply are not aware of.

A good instructor should be able to help you with all of these.

I've been playing 25 years and could never jump a ball. I tried and tried but couldn't do it because I had never been shown the proper way. Then I met Robin Dodson (See my avatar) in just 15 seconds I could jump a ball flawlessley! So yes, I would say any outside input is worth it's weight in gold.

The real question you need to ask yourself is, "Do I want to get better?".

However you answer that question is also the answer to your question regarding lessons.

Thanks to everyone for their replys.
I do think that Mr. Jewett hit the nail on the head and has definately given me some food for thought. If anyone asks if I think they should get lessons I will direct them to his reply.
Thanks again,
Andy
