Hi all!

I am sure most you know the show "Mythbusters".

Wouldn't it be cool and good for pool if they tested some stuff about pool on their show?

I have thought about couple of things they could try.

1. Make a robot that breaks the balls EXTREMELY hard and see how many balls can they make.

2. Can the cue ball or head ball be struck so hard that they will break into two?

Can't think of any more at the moment. Would need some input of ideas.

If we get 4-5 good experiments, I or someone else could send them an e-mail.

Thanks,

Margus.

You really didn't think of them making a robot to test different aiming systems? :)

Hey that's actually a great idea!
Balls being torn apart by extreme breaking power is within the show's limitations and most importantly, it is spectuacular (it involves things being destroyed ), show they will be interested in testing it.

Most users from AzB may want to send an e-mail to Mythbusters to test if they can destroy pool balls with extreme breaking power.

I don't know if this is it, but we can all post here http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/mythbusters/show-talk/beyond-duct-tape.htm. I didn't find an e-mail or something.

Yes I believe the term is blowing up. Mythbusters likes to blow up things and that would be funny.

They could test if their Test Dummy is really a better pool player after a keg of beer or before. Because that is what people here really want to know.

Myths?

Isn't the premise for the show that they attempt to bust myths that the general public would be interested in? What would those be for pool?

I'm not aware of any ball breaking myths.

Come on Loren. If that were true, most table cloth would be yellow. Don't you drink red wine?

Just out off curiosity, do you thik you have trouble pocketing the 7 ball more than any other one?

They should bust the myth that the shooter should look at the Object Ball last! Or, the myth of looking at the Cue Ball last.

Either way, they could get into insulting arguments and be banned from the TV show.

If it doesn't explode or catch on fire, Mythbusters isn't interested.

I'm not aware of any ball breaking myths.

I have heard stories about guys breaking the cue ball or shattering the shaft. But I dunno if casual fans hear such stories or you have to hang around pool halls half your life before you hear it.

Otherwise, you're right... within AZB there's tons of myths that need busting, but the non-hardcore fans don't have any myths about pool except maybe "the black widow is the best player" and "it's all about math and geometry".

Dr. Dave could probably work out the speed needed in MPH to shatter either the shaft or the cue ball. I'm sure the number is higher than what humans can generate though.

I have seen the one ball explode.

In a tavern that played lots of 9 ball and had the oversize cue ball. On table one, the most used table, the one ball, after years of abuse flew into pieces on the break. We got new ball sets the next day.:D

Old/thin shafts breaking and cheap/old balls shattering are not in any way an interesting "myth."

I'm not aware any real "myths" that could actually be tested in they way they run mythbusters.

The show departed from "myths" a long time ago. Now if you get enough people on the Internet to argue about something that would be neat enough to build and get the show's notice, they'll do it.

Frankly, I'm surprised the show is still on the air... but I guess they'll keep blowing shit up as long as people keep watching 'em blow shit up.

-matthew <--- only liked the show when they actually did urban legends and hasn't had cable for 4 years anyway... :)

Margus...The robot is already invented (see Iron Willie, plus a couple of knock-offs). Balls being broken in half has already been done...although not in a "controlled" environment. Nice idea, though!

Once, I broke in an 8 ball tournament and the 10 ball split completely in half. It wasn't even the head ball. Now, before you think that I have/had a king kong break, just know that these balls were old and in REAL poor shape. Nevertheless, I did break 'em hard and it did split into two peices. I kept the peices for several years for luck.

i have seen 3 balls break before. 1 in a bar 2 in poolrooms. one was a new set. all by the same guy, who is kinda large.

kirkwood broke his break cue shaft in vegas into 1,000 pieces. took them a while to clean the table before they could continue.

they seem tape like duct tape on the show, maybe they could make a table and balls of that.

A player here in Indy recently broke in 8 ball and literally shattered the one ball on the head of the rack.

It split into 3 main pieces.

The best Mythbusters ever imho was the Bull in China Shop episode.

They set up a shop with i think 3 aisles-maybe 5-6 feet wide ea. (dont hold me to it). Glass like items on all the shelves. They sent in/locked in the bull and he ran around in there NEVER touching a thing but the ground! He was not sashaying either-he was moving fast while channeling Felix Unger apparently.

I would've left it at that but the MB guys wanted destruction so they either threw in another bull or two and/or moved the shelves closer and finally got the mess they wanted. The runaway best episode from my view.

Also loved when they tested whether a) the presumed Alcatraz escapees could actually have reached land in a man-made boat, and b) whether Jimmy Hoffa was buried under the old Giants Stadium. In each experiment, they said the answer was "no." Definitely an entertaining show!

Only other thing that has been done was Johnny Archer and Jeremy Jones did Ripley's out in Hollywood..Someone post the footage if u find it.

Bust what ?

I would say the show is about busting myths, I didn't really see any of your questions as Myth (no offense). I personally am not aware of any "myths" playing pool, however I do know some misconceptions that people have when they shoot pool regarding cue ball reactions, bank angle etc. but I won't say go that far to call 'em Myth.
I can answer the second question for you as it happend to me :-
2. Can the cue ball or head ball be struck so hard that they will break into two?
When i did it, I put a hole in the cue ball (it wasn't all the way through, it was more like a dent, to this day i regret of not taking a picture of it.), it didn't break into two pieces. May be if some used an old clay pool ball it would break into pieces.
