A buddy of mine, Jay Osmon just shot a 56 to beat his own course record 62 at Cattails golf course in Alamosa, CO.

Here is the link.

How did Jay Osmon, an assistant pro at Cattails GC in Alamosa, Colo., shoot a 15-under-par 56 there on Sept. 5? He lipped out a 25-foot eagle putt at 18 for 55.

Yes, Osmon played that well, if not better (he missed a four-foot putt on the third hole), and was almost apologetic for having done so, inasmuch as he was playing from the blue tees, which measure about 6,000 yards.
Still, it was a memorable round for Osmon, 30, who is preparing for the pre-qualifying stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., next week.
"Still now I don't know if it's completely sunk in," Osmon said.
Osmon, who broke his own course record of 62, made five birdies and two eagles on the front nine and shot 26. "It didn't sound right to me," he said. "On the back nine, I wasn't trying to think a whole lot. I knew I was playing well. I just wanted to stay out of my own way."
He holed a 15-foot eagle putt at No. 10 to keep his momentum going, and birdied four of the last eight.
"I fell out of my chair," head pro Bryce Bervig said when he was told of the round. "I thought, 'you guys are just teasing me.' I quit. I'm never playing again. Golf has been tamed.
"The thing with Jay is, he has a lot of shots that some don't have. He has the confidence and the imagination to hit a certain shot five different ways. That's what separates him from others."

What is a comparable feat in billiards? First of all, the equipment is loose. This is a fairly short course at high altitude...but it's not a gimme. Most par fours and some par 5s you can't use a driver on.

Jay one time did something that I consider to be one of the most amazing displays of consistency that I've ever seen in any sport.

During a benefit tournament, there was a drop zone on a par 5 where you could pay a golfer to hit on the green in two for you. Jay was the golfer. From 244 yards with a 4 iron, he hit it on the green 17 times in a row. That's strong action.

Mr. 56

Congrats to your friend. He would probably be a good pool player too. He most likely possesses extremely good hand/eye coordination and obviously a consistant repetetive motion. Probably a good dart player too if he gave it a try. My old boss holds/held the course record at Crystal Springs Golf Course up here in Northern Calif. He was also a good carpenter. If he's coming into his mental and physical peak he'll probably even shoot better and better golf!

That Crystal Springs course looks fantastic. The only thing I've shot there is a wedding. What did he shoot?

Whenever I play a new (to me) course, I usually ask, "where's the 1st tee, and what's the course record?" If I were to get an answer of 56.....I'd probably have to leave. WOW! Best 9 I've ever had was a 31 (par 36) 3 birdies and an eagle....best 18 hole score - same round 68. Yep, CHOKED!!! I can't fathom breaking 60. SICK SICK SICK!

He's sick good. One time they had a tournament there and everyone complained about the course being set too tough. He bet anyone there $500 he could walk straight out there and break 65. You could have heard a pin drop. Nobody took him up on it. And this was a room full of 100 or so golfers who had just played the course.

56 is a heck of a number. Congrats to your friend. That is an accomplishment.

I dont know what a similar feat in billiards would be....maybe a 400 run in straight pool.

I have shot a 56 on an 18 hole course before....the local par 3 course in my college hometown! lol....When I first started playing, I shot 56's all the time...through 9 holes! :D

I shot a 56 once. But on the second hole I shot a .... Well anyways let's just say that 48 putting is not a good thing. :)

Seriously though, your buddy sounds like an outstanding golfer. Congrats to him.

While we're on the subject - I just finished all my work for the day and it's not even noon. What's a comparable feat in pool?

Thanks! I was thinking probably around 400 straight pool, maybe 10 racks of 9-ball on a loose 9' table. Something like that.

A guy did shoot 55 once, so it's not the lowest ever, but still pretty good I think.

LOL - I think probably getting the rack tight :D

Now that I think about it, Schmidt's winning that 10 ahead set the other night in 39 minutes is probably similar.

The most impessive thing to me is that there is a golf course in Alamosa Co. I grew up very near there, and last time I was home the closest thing to a golf course would have been the hay fields.

Is he 30 years old??

Just wondering if he has ever attempted the Tour or not. I know he was on an easier course but he obviously has talent.

I will keep the name in the back of my head and hope he does well this year.

He has been trying to get on the tour for a while. He had some struggles out of college and finally started really focusing on his game the last two or three years. Changed everything about how he approached it. Works out now, eats healthy, no booze, practices long every day. I think he's on the verge, this is probably his year to get there. Once he gets there and gets comfortable, nobody has to like it.

A very experienced coach in CO who has coached numerous top PGA players said that Jay was the best he'd ever seen at age 18. Jay started working with him again a few years back and that's what started to change everything.

He should be out there on the tour making his $$$$. Hopefully that day is getting close.

Seriously, we could spend all day talking about great golf things Jay has done. He's a legend in a lot of circles because he's done a lot of things that just don't seem possible. Once we were playing with him, he started out Birdie, Birdie, Eagle, Birdie and then he quit because he had to go to work. Most guys would have quit their job before they would have quit that round.

And for the record, that course is not that easy, it's shorter, but most of the teeboxes you can't hit driver off of anyway. I end up hitting driver on only two holes on the back nine. Most are a good long iron. So even though it's short, with the doglegs and things, you're still hitting honest approach shots.

The short par 4s are almost all doglegs with huge trees guarding them. If you go for them off the tee, imagine playing a 330 yard par 3, over towering cottonwood trees to a green you can't see. Eagleing those holes is equivalent to birdying those par 3s....and a birdie equal to parring that hole. Not easy in my book.

Thanks!

Here's another article which goes into more detail about the round and about the changes he's made the last two years:

He'll be starting Q-School next week out here in Cali.

The new Mr 56? Step aside Joe DiMaggio, because there's a new sheriff in town.

I thought I'd give everyone an update. My buddy played in the Q-school and made it through the first round but narrowly missed advancing past the second round.

I'm bummed but I know he'll be back.

I was about to jump up and call BS on this thread because Alamosa is covered in snow right now! I settled down when I found out this feat happened about Labor Day.

Btw, Alamosa has a cute little poolroom with friendly folks working there.

making it thru all 3 stages of Q-school and getting a card is probably one of the toughest things to do in golf. Percentage wise it is a HUGE obsticle, but if he can get his foot in the door on a lesser tour (Canadian or Nationwide) he will have a better chance of making the big leagues that way. I wish him luck....and I'd want 5 or 6 a side from him :)
