ebony split wide open
sanded thursday afternoon to spray my final coat on it friday morning
thursday it was all good, and this is what i found friday morning
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the upside is, i'm glad it happened before i sent him the cue
geez!! how embarrasing would that have been, he takes a shot and KAPOW!!! forearm blows apart

i was planning to have this cue done this week for jim (hardball)
i cant even describe how lowwwwwwwwwww i felt having to call him and tell him the bad news
jim couldnt have been any nicer & understanding about this, but i still feel lousy about it

the odd part about is, i beat that cue against the heel of my hand and on the floor and it didnt make a sound. no buzz. no rattle.
yeah, black epoxy crack filler did enter my mind. JUST KIDDING!!!

Yea, that sucks for sure. Is the ebony cored? If so how long ago did you core it? I have noticed that heat seems to be ebony's worst enemy. I was wondering though, do you always put your pin in after clear coating?

Is the ebony cored? partially. .750" 8" deepIf so how long ago did you core it? 6 months??? not long enuff , apparently I have noticed that heat seems to be ebony's worst enemy. well, was told 6 to 8%
maybe it was , maybe it wasn't ( the latter seems to be the case)
i bought a POS moisture meter not too long ago
cannot get it to read correctly
my mistake for assuming anything

Ebony is one of my 3 favorite woods to use. Thing is is that it is heavy and dense so must be dried slowly. Trying to speed up drying times is not advisable. Most moisture leaves the wood through the end grain and the more dense woods are sealed here to prevent moisture leaving to quickly. Some people feel that coring speed up the drying process considerably but this is not really true. When coring dense woods I bore the hole and then wait another year or so before boring again and installing the coring dowel. It appears what has happened here is that the ebony was not sufficiently dry but the core was so the Ebony couldn't shrink farther or just the opposite and the core was to dry and took on moisture and swelled a little. It does happen and always when you least want it to.

I have a good one, just don't have pics right now. Was taking a pass on a blank, but the bearing wasn't all the way aginst the taper bar. Until the router got half way down the blank that is, when it sunk in and took a sizeable bite...

Here's a more recent one for me.

The rings were cut to different thicknesses. It's a silly aesthetic mistake, but unrepairable without major reconstruction. The B & C checked rings are thicker than the D & E checked rings by .010".

I was taking the final cut on a 31 1/2 inch shaft a few days ago. Half way down the shaft, the power failed. As the router and lathe spun down, the router took a nice "bite" out of the shaft and made it fire wood.

It can happen to any hard wood. The harder the wood the more apt it is to happen. I've had a Olive wood cue laying around for some time now that looks just like that but apparently some one has snagged it as it is gone so I can't get pictures. I've been having a lot of thefts going on lately while I'm in another part of the shop working on someones cue. I got my personal cue, an 8 point 3 veneer cue that I built and have used since 1996 stolen out of my case here in the shop about 6 weeks ago. At least they let me keep my It's George case. I've got 4 surveillance cameras around now continuously running to a 500 gig hard drive. Just can't trust pool players.

I wish it was just pool players that can't be trusted. However, dishonesty lies in ALL levels of society. I've pretty much given up on everyone.....
As far as *&*)) happens. Jerry McWorter showed me a 5k cue that was nearly finished when the lathe took a bite out of it. I bet he still has the thing. It was in a small pile of others......
