Letting a opponent back

Letting a opponent back in the game can be dangerous. On occasion I will do this for what ever reason. Sometimes I feel sorry for the other player or may be I just want it to be a closer match. Last night I watched the John Schmidt vs Earl Strickland match and John Had Earl down by 6 to 1. I may be wrong but to me it seemed that John might of let up just a little and Earl came storming back. It was a shocker for John and another big win for Earl. I love watching both these champions they are absolutely amazing when it comes to shaping tough shots. I have let weaker players hang in there many times just to end up losing to them by the end of the session. Not to say that one of these players is weaker then the other, but its just weird how it works with this sport.
 
its hard to overcome it, it you let someone back in for what ever reason, they are focused the whole time your on the stall, things can get out of hand real fast and I say more often than not you wont win after you let up. Unless one of the players is MUCH stronger than the other.
 
yea ive been there its really bad when the guy who you let comeback and win starts running his mouth that he beat you
 
I didn't watch the whole match so I can't really say if John let up or what. But generally speaking sometimes the leading player can get the mentality to trade games to the finish line.

The thing with Earl is when he gets rolling no player has to let him back in, he's capable of opening the door for himself and walking through with no help from anyone.

Can't say it makes any literal sense but when momentum shifts it seems the impossible happens. Somebody that was struggling mightily starts running out from super safes and the other person that seemed to be dominating can't do anything right now. I don't know what happened in that match, I just caught the tail end of it last night so I am not talking about that one in particular. I have it lined up to watch right now but I'll have to see what is going on live if anything first.

The way I saw it last night was both players were playing such perfect shape that they could do anything, the worst shots they had were just long shots. But every now and then John would get just a few inch's short or long of where he wanted and he would rattle a pocket, leaving Earl the chance to win. Rattling a Diamond pocket is something I know to well,and have come to expect it from everyone that I have seen play on them. It's a fickle game for sure and it does my ego good to see that these "machines" are capable of the same mistakes that I am. I guess I am just jealous that I can't do the things that I want to do every time that I need to on a pool table. I will say that I have seen some incredible pool being played @ Valley forge this weekend, these players are inspiring.

Story of my life. :mad: Ive had people on the ropes from running roughshod over them only to let up for whatever reason and end up losing.
It goes to show that the mental side of the game is probably the ultimate challenge. Staying focused and mentally tough is a skill that has to be refined just like a straight stroke.
