Lighting (bulb) help needed!

Currently using several Philips EL/A-R40-20W-DIMM-REFLECTOR FLOOD LAMPs (not tubes), that are each the equivalent of a 65w incandescent to light my table. It's a 3 light fixture and I'm not interested in replacing the fixture. I just realized the current bulbs have been in use for approximately seven years and appear to be putting out a little less light than before. The bulbs are 33" above the playing surface.
I want to replace the three bulbs and was wondering if I should use the new LED's or a different type of fluorescent bulb? I want to avoid creating additional heat so what type of bulbs would our resident AZ lighting gurus suggest?

Try calling the General Electric Co. at their world headquarters for their lamp division. I grew up two blocks away and my Dad put in 37 years there. I worked there for two years also.

They don't widely publicize their phone, but if they haven't changed it, it should be 216 266 2121. That's the main switchboard for the entire campus.

BTW, NELA stands for the National Electric Lamp Association. They used to, and should still today, do all they can to help anyone who calls. My father always helped design the National tree, and over three decades later, I supplied the product.

FYI, they call light bulbs "electric lamps" and reserve the term light bulb for merely the glass. They'll be immensely impressed that you'd know this! :smile:

you can go to lowes or home depot.....buy and try the LED's out, if you don't like it you can return it and get your money back....did that with the indoor lighting in my mothers home. Took a while to figure out what light kelvin, angle and lumen was in the LED compared to good ol incandescent. Your led's for what your wanting wont draw any more than like 13-15W. They all come with built in heatsinks.

It gets a little warm here in the desert so I like to avoid creating more heat while I'm hitting em' around at home. Thanks for your advice!

Hi Ghost--- I'm heading to Home Depot to pick up some LED's! I really appreciate your input.It's hard to tell if the fluorescents are getting dull or if my vision might be a tad off. Thanks again!:thumbup:

Hi Rip - for me ( given my background as the Village Idiot) the LED replacements are a godsend.

If it were me I would probably want the 5000kelvin light.....the light is very crisp and to me would be awesome on a table. Dont get me wrong, they sure are pricey but with power savings/light clarity and longevity of the chip its a no brainer.

I used to have a real nice table in my place and even those CFL's burnt out every few months.....PIA.

Tell ya one thing dont look into the light, for whatever reason they are WAYYYYY more intense than CFL or Incandescent.....its like burning white hot neutron star bright lol

I just thought it was hilarious going to lowes and homedepot because they did have a little diff selections....we just loaded up all kinds of stuff. Only to return it all except for what we found was suitable to my mothers needs.

I would also not get the kind of bulb that has the heatsink wrapped around the "bulb" its self. As it spreads the light funny. I know your not looking for these type lights, your looking more for flood style being that its R40......also to remember is the ANGLE of the BEAM. You can find them from 33 deg, 60deg and up to 120 deg. For a pool table i would say the larger the angle the better.

Another good thing is after you find what you want you can just return that too and get them off the internet cheaper. THO don't just go with some cheap chit led because its cheap. At least be sure if its not one of your big name brands that at least it has a Cree chip in it.

The floods you use now, if they are what I think they are and if you have the typical classic shade design, are not the right bulb. Floods only shine down and don't make use of the shape of the shade. The shade is designed to reflect and disperse the light. You want normal style light bulbs. I am not a fan of LED and/or CFL for this application.

I use GE 'reveal" . The bulbs have a coating that filters out the yellowing and gives off a much whiter but still soft light.
 
I had trouble finding LEDs at my local Home Depot that were high lumen rated. I ended up getting some on Amazon. I think I ended up with 1500 or 1600 lumen electric lamps.

P.S. I shall now forever refer to light bulbs as electric lamps. :)

In the article it says that "eyes are designed to see with light, not look directly at it" and they are talking more about cell phones and computer monitors. When was the last time you shot pool with your neck all twisted around so you could stare up and look into the light fixture?

Is this close to what you are using?

I've been using G.E. Reveal CFL floods, 26W (supposedly equivalent to 90W incandescent). At first I thought they were great, but after playing some at the local room with Diamond lights I can definitely see the enormous difference in light quality. Now, I ain't paying $800 for a Diamond light, but anything I can do to help see better with less glare will surely improve my game at home.

I have multiple vision problems due to an injury a few years ago. They've done all they can do at this point with the eye, the rest is up to me now, with good lighting being the only thing I can think of that might help me.

FWIW G.E. has some pretty good customer service. The lady I spoke to was a sweetheart named Gloria who spent almost half an hour with me trying to figure it out. I mentioned that I wished I had called before I invested almost $40 in three fancy flood lamps. She never said a wood, but asked me for a bunch of contact info. When she had everything she needed, she asked me what I paid for the lamps. I told her I thought they were about $13 apiece.

"So here's what I'm going to do for you. I'm going to send you a voucher for $39. That's three lamps at $13 each. You can take that into your local Lowes or Home Depot and use it toward the purchase of other lighting."

pool table lights

Pool table lights should be soft with full coverage, without shadows .
with the least amount of glare possible.............................................

40 watt Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Spiral Bulbs is the best..

How many bulbs depends on the size of the table.
I would also defuse the pool table light with white plastic or even bubble wrap makes for a great light defuser if you are using bulbs that don't get hot.

When can you see the best, on a sunny day or a cloudy day?
When do you golf the best,when do you play tennis the best?
How is the lighting done in a gym?

That should answer every ones question on how they want to set up there own pool table lighting.

[I]ust curious if you called Nela?J [/I] I knew if things hadn't changed that they'd send you free lamps or some sort of refund.

I was once contacted by a local Cleveland weatherman for channel 8. He said he couldn't find any clear midgets for his home lighting. I sent him a master crate of a gross of 50 light string sets.

yea we actually found more of what we needed at Lowes as opposed to homedepot
