What do you think about lights over pool tables, in a pool
room? Do you really need proper direct lighting or will
ceilling light be adequate? Opinions appreciated.

Good lighting is critical. I think the diamond lights are some of the *VERY* best but pricey. You can have someone make you some very similar for almost a fourth of the cost.

Others will probably have more info on this like Manwon or other hall owners.

Are you kidding?
Depends on if you want to play/practice seriously or is the table something just for the kids to beat around on. Lighting is one of the most important features of a table/room. Most serious players won't even play on a table light doesn't use flouresent tubes. I recommend a Diamond light or an equal quality/style handmade unit. The typical 3 light styles that you screw bulbs into...are complete junk. ;)

If anyone is interested...member "no illusions"...Mark Mindel makes very fine handmade lighting...the best you can buy & gives a huge discount to forum members. He can be reached at m2mindel@earthlink.net :)

If the lights are too close to the table, it makes mid-table masse/pique shots an impossible option. If the lights are very bright and do not cast shadows, ceiling lights can be very nice.

As a home table owner, I'd like to impress anyone with a table to try those energy saver bulbs that look like a corkscrew.

Not only do they save money on electricity, but the difference between white light and the normal bulbs is stunning.

TX Poolnut<------4 lights on my 9' no higher than 32 inches:)

I like to play most people in a totally dark room. Once the lights are switched off I break out my nightvision gear:D:D:D

31 inches is standard height. Ceiling lights suck, unless the ceiling is low. We had to put up with bowling alley lights for years. Also, the other part of the room, the lights were raised and even with brighter bulbs was WAY too dark.

There is a hall around here with high ceilings and lights up there. That place is lit up like no other. There is a special light above each table that focuses down on them...best lighting I have ever seen!

Agree with TX POOLNUT, I put those bulbs in and like them much better than regular ones.
