The one above is not, the curly appearance is actually the shimmer in the shaft, the one below is an excellent example of a hard curly shaft. It plays super!!

What makes a shaft excellent? What are the characteristics of a great shaft? I'm not talking about Predator or OB1 shafts, just real wood.

Can someone put together a few photos so amateurs like me can recognize a really good shaft so that when you buy a new shaft you can ask the owner/cue maker some intelligent questions. Also what characteristics to avoid?
