Wondering if the double black linen rod/tube is any good? Also does anyone have a good source for different color phenolics? Thanks Greg

Atlas!!!!!!...jer

Thanks Jer,
I was actually curious as if the double black linen that atlas carries, have good machining characteristics, and if i should try any?

The phelolic in butt and joint size is what I need a source for, as all I see at atlas is phenolic ferruel material, none in the size i need.
Thanks again, Greg

This is the material we use for our joint (it is rolled linen phenolic) and it is quite exceptionnal, we've been using it for over 10 years. It seems that the recipe sometimes changes (because the material is not always the same color) but overall we couldn't live without it. While dealing over the phone with the poor service of Atlas (I have had nothing but problems with them in the last 2 years, sorry I had to let it out of my chest) I was informed that they had a couple of providers for this material. If I could I would jump on a new provider but can't seem to find one. Nobody makes rolled linen phenolic but only laminated linen phenolic. Does anyone know an alternative source for this material.

Thierry have you tried talking to Atlas Fibre themselves?
Not Atlas Billiards?

Will there be a difference? Won't they just refer me to Atlas billiard? I've never really understood the distinction bewteen both, is Atlas billiard just a small branch of Atlas Fibre?

But thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

The last time I went direct to Atlas Fibre, I was talking to someone at the factory. I ordered some paper based phenolics. Best I've seen but still not like the old ones.
Double-black looks cleaner to me. I hate that grayish area where the weaves are on the normal black ones.

I been searching also, and keep coming up with the laminated, even that is really high in price when i run accross it. hate to see the cost of rolled from some of the places I saw if they had it. Greg

Have you tried talking to Chad? He's a wicked nice guy who gets the job done. Never have I had a bad experience dealing directly with him. He has ALL the info you need.

I won't use anything else.

Thanks, I already ordered some DB, so Guess I will see. they were out of stock on one of the sizes, so guess i'll get a backorder on that, hope the 2 size colors are still consistent with each other. Hopefully with the double black won't be a problem. Can slots be easily milled in this stuff for billet? Seems like anything to much on a thermoplastic side will give you a hard time due to heat buildup, and will react different depending on which type is used. what about this Double Black? Some of the phenolics i see when searching for the stuff, seem to come with different bonding resins, some more on the thermo side, and some on the glass side, so kind of curious about the machining characteristics. A thermoset holds up to heat better, as far as melting, but will breakdown at around 375, correct? basically wondering what the best rod for cutting billet slots is, without having to play with cutting speed, and feed to much to work with?
I tried to get some in natural on the site as well, and it would not let me add them to my cart. I should have had enough quanity added for It to include them, but still would not add It the to my cart for some reason. wonder if they are out, but usually they will just put It on backorder when that happens and still add it to the cart. Anyone know what the deal is on It? Guess I should call and ask. Greg

The double black linen mills very nicely, I've made lots of billets with it.

Thanks,

Glad to hear it, looking forward to working with it. Done most all my billet from wood so far, except for some of the slats to go in It, used ivory, and micarta sometimes instead of wood for those. I had some ebony turned to start some up, but thought Maybe I would save that for billet in some ebony cues i have planned later or someting really more worthy. If the double black goes good, then i will use it more often. it would be nice because the woods seem to cut differently from one to another, so as one bit might not always be sized correctly to cut different woods for the same slot size. This way would be much more consistent. I want to build some cues for some I know that have less to spend, but want to give them something nice, and when doing a one off type design those kind of problems take more time, therefore would cost more to produce, something more consistent like this DB would help that. It must be good material because is not the lowest in price i have used. I want some in the natural color as well. Seems like you can go through rod pretty quick. Greg
