Live Stream- NO commentary or COMMENTARY?

I did two or three matches during the Vega$ events. That is good enough for me. I believe it was SVB vs Kiamco or maybe it was Biado. The other was Klatt vs Earl. Can't remember the other one. Not sure if they were recorded. Again, I'm nothing special but I do speak my mind. The last match I did, Ken did most of the talking but that was my intention cause he had some air to clear and I just made sure I put him on the spot to do so. He is a straight talker which I respect.

To me, Ken and JCIN are the two best commentators. Billy has slipped to third. Again, just my opinion.

12 straight hours watching pool. I have better things to do.

Everyone should be entitled to speak their mind and you have that right as much as anyone. Everyone has their favorite commentators and you shouldn't be any different.

But you did say that you were better than all of those "simply bad" commentators, but contrary to what you said, that makes you "special" at least from your viewpoint.

I think more pool fans should take a chance to sit behind the mike. Maybe some "simply good" commentators can be discovered to replace these as you call them "simply bad" commentators.

Heck, maybe you should consider taking over as a regular commentator instead of criticizing what you call the "simply bad" commentators.

Be a part of the solution.

P.S. Which live streamer was it that you did commentary for? I'll check on youtube to see if I can find the matches you mentioned. I'm sure you did a fine job and I'm always interested in seeing the differences between commentators.

I like commentary, but when it turn to "I wouldnt do that", "I think he should/will take that shot", i could turn off and stop watching.

Guys like Mike Siegel are pissing me off.

I don't think I'm special. If you got inference, it was not intended.

I forgot Jeremy Jones -- he is better than all the rest. And I'll take credit for getting him in the booth first a few years ago in Vega$.

It was for TAR - the only group I knew streaming with commentary on the matches. Not sure which ones JCIN uploaded.

No sweat, I will look to see if JCIN uploaded those particular matches.

Yes, all of the commentators you mentioned have unique capabilities. Jeremy Jones is always a favorite of mine any time I am sitting in the booth.

But the truth is, I enjoy anyone's company while doing commentary. I look for the uniqueness in each person and try to bring that to the surface. It doesn't matter if they have a completely different style or different personality from mine. It's really all about sharing the best of what's available to the viewing and listening audience.

I would most likely have a great time doing commentary with Alvin Nelson. It's just my way of giving back to the pool community.

Pool commentary is not about "greatness", it's about love for pool.

Thanks for the discussion.

I understand your resentment toward a commentator saying "I wouldn't do that". I don't like that either but sometimes, the commentator gets caught up in the heat of the moment. But I see nothing wrong with the commentator ......oh..... you mean "I WOULD take that shot". I get it now. Yes, I can see that as well. That could be a turn off suggesting that the commentator knows better than the player.

I try to make a point that there are many different ways to play position and to shoot a shot and being down close to the table is FAR different than just sitting in the booth. The fact that the champions are playing in the event and I'm sitting in the booth speaks volumes about who knows best for them. Still, I do think it is important but not from an egotistical standpoint, for commentators to suggest what shot the players will be taking next and "why" when appropriate. A lot of times the commentator will see things that the player does not simply because he isn't in the heat of battle.

It's a lot easier making a shot when you're sitting behind the mike.

Now let us be loose to Accu-Stats and the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship.

I have promised that if Tommy Kennedy wins the U.S. Open I will attend church with him when he passes through town.

When I first began playing pool two years ago, I watched an Efren vs. somebody match with commentary by Billy Incardona and Grady Matthews. In one hour I learned the difference between playing pool and banging balls.

Grady walked the audience through every shot Efren was getting ready to make (the other guy didn't shoot much ;)). Efren doesn't play at a slow pace, but Grady was able to cover almost all of Efren's options for english, speed and cue ball position before Efren took the shot. The few times Efren did something unexpected, they'd say "Now that was an option we hadn't considered."

Grady and Billy still had plenty of time for stories, backgrounds and such between racks. Their secret was to get to the point and don't ramble.

I know that many experienced players don't like a running play-by-play, but it's invaluable to new players.

This is one of the things I am currently struggling with right now in my mind. I am on the fence about providing detail of shot by shot or just doing it when I think it is appropriate. I know that there are always new players just starting to watch matches on live stream and they are desperately needed by the live streamers.

Like you have already mentioned, experienced players don't want to hear the simple things over and over, even with some reasons why thrown in for good measure. Less experienced players are thrilled to know in advance what the commentator thinks the player will choose to shoot and the reasons why.

As long as players play at a fast pace, shot by shot is fine. But if shooters take 3 minutes per shot, you better have some stories to tell or there will be a lot of dead air time.

Or you can sing or invite people into the booth....

No singing for me. :D

I do like that 40 second clock at the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship.

I'm kind of half with you on this one Joey. I would prefer that I listen to a commentary, just feels a bit more professional.

Altho, I have listened to some pretty bad ones. One in particular that I will always remember. They had some female that they invited to sit in. I have no idea who she was or to what capacity she was involved in pool.

After every shot, all she said was Wow. And get this, in a nasally monotone voice. If you want to see what she sounded like, pinch your own nose and say, Wow.

So, it was like, wow, wow wow, wow yow. All I was thinking myself was Wow, this woman must be pretty hot because she has absolutely no idea of what is happening in front of her. Me thinks someone in the control booth was looking to get a hand job after.

That sort of commentary, a person can do without, altho I didn't mute it because I wanted to see how many times she could say Wow in one set, and it was so absurd
that it became quite funny.

Wow, eh?
