Live Stream - THE NEXT GENERATION

I don't know if any of you out there heard about CISCO's new router CRS-3.

It enables the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress to be downloaded in just over one second; every man, woman and child in China to make a video call, simultaneously; and every motion picture ever created to be streamed in less than four minutes.

This technology is here already. So maybe, just maybe Live Streaming will have a new lease on life. It sounds exciting.

With this type of speed it is unlikely that Live Streaming will have any type of freeze-ups and larger image screens should be the norm.

Television and telephone services should become more competitive.

This link will probably only work for a short while. http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/cisco-says-new-router-to-%22forever-change-the-internet%22-the-question-is-%27when%27-438818.html?tickers=CSCO,T,VZ,S,QQQQ,GOOG,^IXIC

Yea I saw the article on yahoo, its pretty interesting. They said it could play every single movie ever made in about four minutes..How strong is that?

Even if the router can handle the bandwidth, does not mean the current infrastructure will be able to handle it. Still have a long way to go before that type of data transfer will hit Joe consumer.

Actually, the fiber optic wire that we currently use can transfer 1000's of times more information than we currently do. The connections that send and receive the information are what needs upgraded, which isn't that hard to do and the cost is minimal.

If so, the potential is enormous...no more stream freezes, etc...the white circle of death eliminated. WOW! Bring it on! :)

Beav you're a smart guy, but nothing is quite that easy. And minimal costs are in the eye of the beholder or head bean counter or the non-money making stream operator.

In the tech development/business world it's a general rule that when the media says some consumer tech thing is about to take over the world the average joe is going to be using it in roughly 10 years.

Take 3G for example. Or electricity/gas stations on every corner. or even non-dial up internet connections. It wasn't until just a year or two ago that dial-up use dropped to under 50 percent of the total users in the U.S. Dial-up started in the very early 90s. Business folks in general are not into being early adopters of anything. Too much risk.

I think streams can save pool. But it's not the technology that will do it. You know the old computer saying of Sh.. in, Sh.. out. What will save the streams is a successful business model. Technology is only a part of that. It's still going to come down to a really smart person figuring out the business proposition.

What beav said. The bottleneck is at the pool hall. There might be a CRS-3 somewhere between the hall and the viewer, but it's no good if the pool hall can only upload 40 Kb/s of video data to it.

For your reference, at around 200-300 Kb/s the video looks pretty decent. You can get 500+ with a fairly nice connection. CD quality would be like 2000-3000.

For a pool hall to upgrade from typical internet service (uploads at 256 Kb/s, but the actual rate is much lower, that's just the maximum theoretical rate) they may need to spend an extra 40-100 bucks a month, depending on how lucky they are for ISP choices.

let's just start a little business analysis for mr. or ms. pool hall owner. And let's accept that it will cost me $100 a month to get a good connection.

I already don't make much money. And any expense directly affects the amount of money i take home each month. So you want me to pay $100 month and what exactly do i get out of it. I have to pay for new equipment. I have to pay someone to set it up and take care of the equipment. i have to pay someone to do the weekly stream.

Approximately 100 people around the country are going to see it. How do i get paid for that. I got some locals watching but they already play at my place.

Oops on last night's stream (this happened on Lenny's stream Tuesday night) one the bogus commentary people led the chat in demeaning and directly insulting one of the players because of her weight. Her mother and friends saw it and now there's a lawsuit coming into play.

And now my hardware is down and my waitresses and cook don't know how to fix it so i have to hire a tech at $150 an hour. The town's mad at me because of what's said about the girl. The cops now tune in. I hope no one talks about gambling.

And what do i get for this $100 a month plus. I can't make a direct relationship to income. And i need to recover the tables......this is the tough world of business.

It's already been said but you are only as fast as your slowest route/link/connection/ISP. 5-10 years from now will be awesome.

I must have missed that as I usually start watching when I get home EST time & this morning that was a little after 2. I have an idea of who the person is that was made fun of. Anyone who purposely lead the discussion to discuss something that is irrelevant to them is a lowlife.

If this were to come to pass it could have huge implications. Not only on pool streaming but entertainment in general . A person for a small investment , at least in comparison to a television network could produce a sitcom , documentary , or any other program on their own.

A lot of money at stake , you would think cable television and broadcast networks would be monitoring such technology , a lot of advertising money at stake.

The PBA could stream their own tournaments and sell there own advertising slots . I think you would see government trying to control the internet and content pretty quickly , then there is the taxing thing.

Potential for pool is good , a person could set up challenge matches , and if he could set up local advertisement he could stream free . Top players could invest in the necessary equipment and sell or stream them their selves.

Man , what a can of worms .

Sure! (Good ideas, except for the taxing thing but you and I know it's coming)

Perhaps in the future, we will even be able to read the numbers on the balls when watching a live stream.

I think it will be good for pool, especially the fans . I think it will be good for the streamers , i think it will increase viewer ship . I'd bet someone will come up with something like WEBTV so that it will allow people to just watch streaming video on it.

I hope that live streaming doesn't hurt Accu-stats because i've enjoyed their product over the years and i've learned a lot from their videos. Pat Fleming has done a lot for pool and he's a good guy on top of that.....

I hope people do understand that this isn't a router like the one sitting on your desk at home. This is backbone class hardware. Most peoples interweb problems aren't because of limitations in AT&T's fiber network...it comes from bottlenecks in other places.

Hey Joey!

You're talkin' my domain now! This is the class of hardware I work on at, well, that thing that gets in the way of my pool playing -- "work."

DGunter's correct; the Cisco Carrier Routing System 3 (CRS-3) is indeed carrier-class hardware. This is *NOT* your dinky little LinkSys wireless router that you have sitting on your desk at home.

Before everyone starts running out to "go buy one to make my Bigtruck and OTR streams better," you better know that this is what the CRS-3 looks like:

While your at it, buy 72 of them so you can get the full 322 terrabits/second. They only cost about 90k each.

I wonder how much AT&T would charge per month to get an OC-768 installed in my local poolhall.

You always seem to have an axe to grind especially with the streams. You complain and complain but what do you do for pool besides donate to Chris Bartrum side betting?

You know who I am but I have asked before who you are with no answers, another troll hiding anonymously and taking pot shots. Sorry I was not at the booth when whatever comments were made but I will find out who was making the comments and take care of it. As for a lawsuit, give me a break. I know your type, you think you know it all but have no clue, if your in AZ I would say you play 6 speed or below because you just don't get it.

I know we had one young lady play on the stream, her name is Heather and she is a good young player. If people in the chat were being disrespectful that is up to the mods to ban people or calm the chat especially if I am not there, when I am there I put an end to that stuff quickly. The OTR chat is tame compared to most and situations usually are handled quickly.

I do not get paid by Kolby's and it does not cost them anything, it cost me to bring pool to you who only seems to complain about it, if you do not like it then do not watch is all I can say. I have a good following and usually get anywhere from 500-3,000 unique hits every Tuesday without us going to the home page so the numbers are not flawed like you would say since they can only see it on our Ustream page or OTRtv.com. I am sure you will say its about 100 realistically as you want to think that its not possible that 1,000s are tuning in for the streams but they are. Here is my metrics report for last night, keep in mind I never went to the home page of Ustream either.

I hope so too, James. Pat Fleming is the pioneer of high quality video for pool. I'm sure he is staying on the cutting edge.

His Live-Streaming is still at the head of the class and he's still cranking out high quality matches wherever he goes.

I thought the video made that clear but thanks for the heads-up anyway.

So what would be your guess before the carriers make this type of speed available to the public?

BTW, GOOD LUCK AT Valley Forge in the PRO DIVISION.
